Vox Cambridge 30R
There is one for sale somewhat locally and I was wondering if anyone here had any opinions on the amp. Its $250 OBO and I'd have to drive about an hour or so to pick it up. It's one of those hybrid amps with a 12AX7 in the preamp and 10" speaker. Is it priced right? How does it compare to my Vox Pathfinder 15R? Thanks!

they appear to be well regarded, but not too common ... i would assume it's a beefier Pathfinder 15, but somebody else knows more, i'm sure ... is this the one that's on Ebay right now ???

I had a Cambridge 15. Loved it. Wish I hadn't gotten rid of it - and I can't remember why I did. Good sounding. A little flubby in the lows when you crank up the gain, but totally workable.
I didn't have any problems with reliability, but I never see them around anymore, so I can only imagine there's a reason.

They were known for problems with the optocoupler. Easily fixed, but you would be putting more money into the amp.
The Cambridge Twin, with 2 10", is more desirable, but has the same problem. For $199.99 I bought an Orange Crush 30R, with a 10" speaker. It's a good amp with a different sound. I've run it in parallel, with my 15R. It's not much louder than the Pathfinder, but it has more bottom end. It's also cheaper (new), than the Cambridge. Personally, I would buy another Pathfinder 15R. and run it parallel. |
