Old Tweed Speakers
Hello,
I recently bought a 1960 Deluxe tweed in pretty good shape and only a few minor changes (filter caps and the handle). The speaker, which is an old Jensen P12 with the bell in the back, sounds really well but when I let a note decay I get some crackling. I assume this is common with a speaker this old? The crackling doesn't occur if I cut the note off quickly. Does this mean I have to replace or recone the speaker? If I remember correctly I think crackling means that the speaker itslef might need to be tightened but don't quote me on that. I appreciate anyone's suggestions.

I recently had a similar problem with my '56 Deluxe.
It got worse and some tapping around with a chopstick revealed a loose solder on the cap on the tone control. Damn solder only lasted 53 years. I wonder if it would be covered under warranty. It could be one of many things. |

1. Try with a new/good speaker.
2. How old are the filter caps? They may not be original, but they still may be too old - depends on when they were replaced. 3. Check the jacks for oxidization. 4. Check the tube sockets for grime in the pin sockets. 5. It could be pots. Twiddle all the knobs to see if it helps or makes it worse (if so, use an electronics lubricating cleaner and shoot some into the pot and turn them back and forth). 6. Could be old/bad tubes as Wally mentioned. 7. Also, as Charlie mentioned it could be a bum solder joint. I've had 2, 3, and 4 happen to some of my amps. I had #5 happen to an old Silvertone (crackling from a pot that was also scratchy).
