Tube Noob Question

What solid state component(s) are replacements for tubes (in the theoretical world)? I told my daughter I was going to look for tubes and she later asked if I had found the pipes I was looking for. My electronics knowledge is very limited, so any help with an explanation of tubes would be greatly appreciated.

The greatest/worst foreward/backward advent in electronics technology- Triode Tubes were replaced by transistors, A fella named Shockley is credited with most of the R&D in 1947. Thats why everything got smaller. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but thats the same year as the alleged crash in Roswell. ha ha ha ha

Generally, transistors. Transistor stages are commonly integrated into IC chips, though many instrument-level audio devices still use discrete transistors for signal amplification (including FETs, short for Field-Effect Transistors, including JFETs and MOSFETs).
