Visit with David Allen

A friend and I wound our way southward and across the Ohio River yesterday to visit David Allen. The purpose was to try a couple of amps that David has on hand, a Brown Sugar 1x12 combo and a prototype of his Classic 10.

First of all, as others here have commented, David is a nice guy. He patiently put up with our noodling and answered our questions, not in a rush at all.

Second, about the amps, which we tested using my MIM Classic 60s Strat fitted with Fralin Vintage Hot pickups. I've wondered for some time about the Brown Sugar. It's a winner. It gathers together tweed, brown, and blackface Fender features and rolls them together into a potent package. Someone needs to buy that amp. (It's listed for sale on David's page.) Then there's the Classic 10, a sweet-sounding amp that can also scream. The prototype is fitted with one 6V6 that's driving a new Jensen P12Q. I was very impressed, especially by the amp's voice at moderate levels. Someone needs to buy this amp, too, especially with the cool blue diamond tolex.

All in all it was a worthwhile adventure.

Cool post Bob. I've long wanted to meet David ... he's a great guy to talk to on the telephone at least. And it's the Brown Sugar that sticks in my mind. Someday, gotta try that amp!

Shoulda told us... I'd have had you pass on a "thank you" for me.

Hey Bob, I thought you were done with multiple amps? You know its dangerous for GAS addiction to even look at cool amps, much less drive to them and play them ;)

Yeah, I remember Bob clearing out a bunch of amps awhile back. Can't argue with a trip to David Allen, though. It's funny, I was looking at his For Sale page yesterday. The Brown Sugar looks pretty nice.
