New speaker squealing

Hey everyone, I've got a nasty little problem here. I bought an Eminence 4 ohm speaker off Ebay to replace the dried out little bugger that came with in my '72 Champ. The speaker appears to be brand-new.
Anyway, I got the old one out and the new one in, but when I turned up the volume, instead of a luscious bloom, I was greeted with the most horrible squealing ever. In fact, a few hours later, and my ears STILL hurt! The guitar signal came through, but VERY much underneath the noise. I am having some difficulty troubleshooting this problem. Can any amp gurus out there give me a hand? Many thanks in advance,

Jeremy

All I can guess is you have a microphonic preamp tube or pickup and the new speaker is way louder than the old one, putting things over the brink of feedback..
maybe.

Also, as odd as it may seem, some effects pedals can be microphonic, I've got a vibe that screams if it's too close to my champ when the overdrive is also on.

I had this happen on a tweed model once a while back. If you are sure that the speaker is the issue and tried a third speaker to make sure 100% is was the new speaker that is giving you the problem then try this. Take a piece of wire and touch one end to the amp chassis and the other end to the speaker frame. This cured my problem. I hope this helps!!

Alright, more weirdness. I put a different 12ax7 in, and that seemed to help a bit. What's strange is that when I tested the speaker out before, I never turned the volume knob past about "2", thinking the squeal would get worse with volume. It actually goes away once I get around 3 o'clock on the dial, and the speaker sounds quite good! I really don't know what to make of this situation. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks so much guys, you're really helping me out!

Jeremy, you need to isolate the cause of this "squeal". Make a speaker wire with some zip cord, about 5-10 feet of it ... an RCA plug at one end, a 1/4" phone plug at the other. Now you can plug into another cab. Four ohms is preferable, but for this test, eight ohms will do. Try as many different speakers as you can; we want to know if the sound happens with any other speakers.
