Any 1/2 Watt Smokey Amp players out there?
Man I love my little Smokey amp(cost 25 dollars).I run it through my Epiphone Valve Jr External 12" cabinet.Sounds huge with lots of creamy distortion at bedroom levels, and only using a 9 volt battery to power it all.I can imagine how great it would be through a 2X12 or 4X12 cabinet.Any one else out there using this for practice?

i have never tried mine with an extension cab ... i have heard they sound great through a 4x12 cab, but as you can imagine, battery life would suffer severely ... i think you would need to use an AC adapter ...

I think the battery, as it looses its charge creates less sound until it wont power the cabinet. I have not done a test to see if the distortion level changes yet.9 volt batteries are cheap(99 cent store).I like the sound way better than through the little Smokey speaker.

I love how the volume knob on the guitar is the distortion control.
I bought a project box from Radio Shack and did a 'swirl' paint job on it and am going to put the amp guts in there since I'm tired of changing the cigaretter box. I'm also adding a 9v power supply and also a cord tester, plus belt clip.

I got one a few years ago and it's great for quiet practice. I then built an extension cabinet from some nice hardwood I had in the garage and installed an old 10in blue frame speaker that came out of my old Bassman. It sounds great through that and is noticeably louder.
My son takes the Smokey and cab to school for his band practices but sometimes complains that it distorts to much with his Epi LP junior!! Maybe he needs to learn to use the volume control on the guitar more......... Maybe I should make another cabinet and turn it into a 2x10 as I have another of these speakers in the studio sitting doing nothing.

I use my Smokey as a backup if I have my 6G3/6G11 homebrew on the workbench for my usual tinkering. The Smokey is very nice through a good speaker, a Weber 12A125 for example. Surprisingly loud too.

I built my own a couple of weeks ago. Got it to power up and make sound, but I need to try it through a larger speaker. Fun times!

Here's a cool effect with a Smokey:
Have someone hold the Smokey cupped in their hands, and firing the speaker towards their mouth. Someone else plays the guitar, and the person with the Smokey stands at a Mic and controls the output of the Smokey with the shape of their mouth. As the "Singer" with the amp moves their mouth, the sound gets altered before it goes out of their mouth and into the mic. What comes out of the P.A. sounds like a pretty hip "Talk Box" type of effect. Also, you can use the Smokey as a OD Pedal, between your guitar and amp. As far as more/bigger speakers? I've been thinking of building a "Stack" out of a cigarette carton, to set the Smokey on top of it. I think that'd be pretty cool. |

Any pics of the wiring, by chance? My clone sucks batteries even when a guitar is not plugged in. I'm a noob when it comes to circuits.

I love my Smokey, but I'm not sure all the vendors of Denmark Street appreciated my shopping around for the best price when I bought it; after all, it only cost £20.
