tubes for Vicky Bassman
I purshased an rca 5751 tube for the first preamp spot, the amp had an electro-harmonix 12ay7 in it when I bought it.The guy I got the tube from threw in a phillips jan 12ax7.My question is how do the other preamp slots affect tone,is the second spot for the bright volume control. What is everyone thoughts on the jan phillips 12ax7.
I think the electro-harmonix 12ay7 is a pretty decent tube.Alot cheaper than an rca for sure.In the other preamp spots I have 2 groove tubes, they sound pretty good also,I was surprised.I did not hear much difference between the phillips and the groove tube in the second position, the phillips sounds a bit brighter. I have not heard rca 12ax7s and was thinking about trying some. Can anyone help me out here, how does the rca sound compared to phillips? Thanks Dave |

I prefer 50's GE's in the preamp slots and a 50's RCA 12ay7 in the first position, then some Tung Sol 5881's, or JAN Phillips or Sylvania small bottles, then a NOS rectifier preferably Mullard or GE, then sit back and enjoy the tone.
