Orange doesn't make the AD1510 anymore, but I can vouch for its bigger brother, the AD1512. It is really a great amp -- very toneful and versatile, and very quiet at idle. It is extremely solid and pretty heavy for its size. Other amps with tube rectifiers include the new Gibson GA-5 (nearly $500), vintage Gibson GA-5 and similar Gibsons, small vintage Fender amps like the Champs and Princetons (under $500 for silverface versions), and assorted other vintage amps.

The GA-5 specs on Gibson's website
are not the specs I saw earlier. This amp is quite different from the original GA-5, which had a tube rectifier and a single 6V6 power tube. That's too bad, although the EL84 might sound nice.
The Orange website is not updated very often or very thoroughly. All I know is that one of the largest Orange dealers in the country has told me that the AD1510 was discontinued. After playing the Goldtone GA15RV at a local shop, I can only say that the Orange AD1512 appears to be built more solidly (as also noted in various reviews) and has noticeably less background noise. The tone controls of the AD15 are nicely voiced, and the tube compression results in great sustain and tactile feel with less harshness than most solid state rectifiers, although some may prefer the extra headroom and somewhat tighter low end that a SS rectifier provides. I thought the GA-15RV sounded nice, but I think the Orange sounds even better and is more versatile. Especially now that the price difference between the GA15 and the AD15 has narrowed to $200 or less, I would definitely go Orange, but YMMV. If you can't swing the ticket on these, then keep looking for a vintage Fender, Gibson or Ampeg in the sub-20 watt range -- many old models can be had for anywhere from $150 to $600. |

why a new amp?
I recently got an old Montgomery Ward Champ type amp off eBay, made by Valco / Supro , has 12ax7, 6v6, 5Y3 rectifier, not real loud but it sounds very sweet.
And much cheaper than any comparable new point to point amp. I may have to install some new tubes and speaker but it will be set for a long time to come. |
