Celestion AlNiCo Blue vs. Weber Blue Dog
Are these speakers comparable? The Celestions are just over $300...
Thanks, Adam

Very comparable, esp if you mean the 15W Blue Dogs. The 30W and 50W speakers sound different than the Celestion Blues, but it's still the same kind of sound, just with less early breakup.

Thanks, guys!
I think I'm jonzing for a '65 Deluxe Reverb RI and am already thinking of changing the speaker (actually on another DRRI player's recommendation.) I hear great things about the Celestion Blue but just can't swallow spending 3 Benjis on something that can be "blown." $165 is better, right?

There's no other speaker that sounds as good as a Bluebell.
The Weber might sound real good, but there's nothing that sounds as "atmospheric" as a Blue bell. I have two of them in a Prescription Combo, and one in a Maz Jr.. I actually postponed my purchase of the Rx for a couple of months in order to save the extra money for the Bluebells after hearing Neil Zaza's Rx with Bluebells.
Of course, a lot depends on what type of sound you're really lookin' for. Some amps are probably not good candidates for BB's. I play clean, with maybe a little "edge", and the Dr Z's with BBs are perfect for me. JB |

I'll bite, jmiles, where do I read about these Blue Bells? A quick Google search was not helpful.
Please keep it coming, guys! Adam

I tell you what...
All things being equal, I'd still go with Ted Weber's products. He's a great guy who stands behind his stuff, and is easily accessable. Try getting ahold of the owner of Celestion or Eminence...??

"All things being equal"
Ah, but all things aren't equal. If you get a Blue, you'll have no need to contact the owners of Celestion. Weber's are good, but why do you think everyone is trying to copy Celestion's Bluebell? Remember that speaker shoot-out in Guitar Player? They said that the Celestion Blue was the winner by miles. I beleive they also said something like there are two catagories of speakers, Celestion Blues, and everything else! I think that was the GP review. I know that when Dr Z sent in a Prescription Combo for a review, they told him it wasn't really fair, because he had Bluebells in the amp.
Amps, tubes, speakers, guitars, strings, etc., etc., all all personal choices. You have to find the sound that YOU want to hear. I have tried Webers, and they weren't for me. They didn't have the harmonic complexity or "atmospheric" qualities that i like to hear. Blues are supposed to overdrive very sweetly, but I never drive them into that zone. To me, their clear, clean sound is heavenly. They are expensive, and I wouldn't suggest that you put one in a lousy amp. What would be the point? But if you have a stellar amp, put in the best that you can afford! JB |

If you want the sound of Blues, buy Blues. I have two in a 2x12 cab and they are stunning. I'm thinking of getting another one with a new baffle for my Princeton Reverb.
You can find them used and in great shape quite frequently for $200 shipped. That's only about $15 or $20 more than a new Blue Dog shipped. |

Man I sure hope they're getting closer... I have Celly Blues in three of my amps & I agree, it's like comparing Motion Sound to Leslie, there's nothin' like the real thing... but at 300 bucks a pop, if any of these babies blow out, I'd probably have to take a look around... cone cry or not, ouch, ...
