Tried one at a local Guitar center. It's not bad, I thought it had a pretty good sound at the volume level I was playing. I really couldn't open her up so I don't know what it sounds like when cranked.

bought one last summer for a recording project. havent used it a lot since. but, i did retube it as i thought the stock tubes (groove) to be a little brittle and harsh. also, i wanted more head room... it starts to distort past 3 or 4 on the volume pot. so, i put a pre amp tube in the 1st position that gave me more of that headroom. helped a bit.

i would like to try a celestion greenback or vintage speaker, too.

basically a good 40 watt amp with power and punch, but needs a little more clarity, with warmth, at higher volumes. looks cool, too.

real fendery.

I have one. It is very good amp, with classic Fender tone, but still it cannot compete with its older brothers: Twin Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, Bassman etc. Tone wise it is closest to Bassman, which means it has warm tone.
Don't expect heavy distortion on dirty channel, because it can give you mild overdrive only.
It is almost impossible to play this amp at home levels and to get good tone at the same time, so if want something to play in your room you should seek for something with less than 40 Watts: Deluxe Reverb (22W), Blues junior (15W), Peavey Classic 30, Vox AC30 (both 30W) etc.

BTW it is almost the same amp as Hot Rod Deluxe, which is little darker with more overdrive, and it don't come in tweed (except in limited editions i think).

I just bought one and I love it. I can get a lovely tone at low volumes and it takes my pedals really well.
Lovely warm tone with a nice sparkle when you turn the presence to 5.
Looks gorgeous too.
I would buy it again with out hesitating

I bought mine after some research. I wanted a clean sound, and this amp has that. I play a American Series Ash Tele through it and it has great tone, just what I was looking for. Recently I got a Highway One HSS in Alder and I think that guitar sounds a lot like Robert Cray when I play through the BDRI. I'm pleased with mine and I payed "pre increase pricing" of 600.00 for mine.

Good luck!

BTW forget unreliability posts to do with overheating on these amps.
I found out last they changed the circuit boards/solder on these 3 years ago eliminating the problem.

I read a recent post on here or the strat forum about some of these coming out of the shop with white groove tubes, which was giving it the brittle/harsh sound - I just checked mine however (an 09 model) and its def fitted with red groove tubes a much warmer sound - and once connected to my 2x12 (with G12h's) its a sound to die for.

Love this amp...

Bought mine about six months ago, gigged it, played it at home (alone)... it's a great amp, for my taste, expecially on the clean channel. It has a certain rudeness I really like, an old-style straight-forwardness I'm very fond of.
I'm decided to keep things stock for a while, and this amp it's satisfying straight out of the box. A recommended buy.

I've had one for a year or two. Probably the BRIGHTEST Fender amp I've ever heard, which is perfect for my needs; works well with a band.

As others have said, the gain channel never goes beyond a nice overdrive -- also perfect for my needs. You get crunch without losing clarity.

All in all, a good workhorse of an amp. It has a good basic set of features (2 channels; spring reverb; effects loop). I think it sounds fine at living room volume, and also in a band (but then, I'm not the type that needs to crank an amp to be happy -- I think my Twin sounds great at 2).

FWIW, I compared it to the Blues Deville Reissue (4x10), the day I bought it. I preferred the Blues Deluxe, because it's 1x12 speaker had more clarity and growl -- a "rudeness," as Frenchi said. The Deville added a layer of smoothness that didn't appeal to me.

Also, I happen to have a tweed Hot Rod Deluxe, and it sounds nothing like the Blues Deluxe. Whole different critter.

How would you describe the difference in sound? I'll be buying something in the next week or so, and I'm split between these two and the Blues Jr. - especially since they all come in tweed editions right now...

I've played them all in the shops, but I was always paying more attention to the guitars. All of them sounded great to me!

Sorry - I just re-read this a few times and it looks like you did describe the difference. Thanks!
