Cap Job Blackface Bassman
Has anyone out there done a cap job on a Bassman, in particular the powersupply caps?
I am trying to locate a supplier for the caps. I have a bunch of 40 uF, 450 volt caps. The schematics call for 525 to 600 volt caps. The amp is mid 60's vintage. The smaller electrolytics are available locally. Thanks |

Sprague Atoms are available from Mouser in 500 volt ratings.
Looking at the AA165 schematic... you've got three 20uf @ 525v and two more 70uf @ 350v. The 70uf caps are in series resulting in the equivalent of 35uf @ 700V. Sprague makes 100uf @ 350v resulting in the equivalent of 50uf @ 700v which would beef up your power supply slightly. The Spragues are also available from Watts Tube Audio. (as well as a number of other sources) http://www.turretboards.com/ The AA165 schematic shows 425 volts on the screen grids and 415 volts on the PI plate supply. 450 volts caps would be cutting it pretty close. The preamp supply node drops down to 390 volts so you might be o.k. there. Stick with 20uf each on the dropping string. |
