Bandmaster Speaker Impedance Matching Question
I have a 1964 Bandmaster head. I would like to run it into a single 12-inch speaker (I have a 2-12 4-ohm small-box Bandmaster bottom I use for bigger gigs). I know the Bandmaster has a 4-ohm output. Here are my questions:
--How much volume would I lose when I run the head into an 8-ohm 12-inch speaker, as opposed to using a 4-ohm 12-inch speaker? I know this may be hard to describe in specific terms, and is somewhat dependent on speaker efficiency--I'm just looking for a ballpark idea. Right now, comparing my closed-back 1-12 speaker cabinet with a generic Eminence to my 2-12 reissue Jensen-loaded Bandmaster cabinet, it seems like I'm losing about 30 percent of subjective volume. (I know this isn't an apples-to-apples comparison as I'm comparing a two-speaker 4-ohm cabinet to a one-speaker 8-ohm one; I'm just throwing it out there as an observation.) --What 12-inch 4-ohm speakers are available and recommended? So far, I've only found the Eminence Texas Heat 4-ohm version. --Will there be any long-term damage to my Bandmaster head if I run it at 8 ohms rather than 4 ohms? I think the answer to this question is "no," but I don't know for sure. |

No problem...
I ran my '64 Bandmaster head into a 1X15 cab for years, with no ill effect
You don't get any more power out of a tube amp with a change in impedance, so all you lose is the 3 dB from only having one speaker (all else being the same, which it never is). I don't know anything about 4-ohm 12" speakers, but I do have Jensen RI C12N's in my Bandmaster cab. Maybe you just need a 1X12 combo?

Hi Bluesbob,
Thanks for the info. I also own 1-12 and 1-10 combos--I'm just trying to find a way to use my Bandmaster more without carrying around that 2-12" bottom. If you also own a 1964 Bandmaster, I don't have to tell you how great it sounds! |
