77 SFTR Master vol. - Amp advice

Hi all,

I'm an old member but rarely post...apologies in advance.

Sure would appreciate some opinions on this topic. I'm considering purchasing or trading for a 77 SFTR master vol. amp. in excellent condition and without mods. The deal is with a reputable store. The bargain price is $650.00. The trade plus cash price (mint BJ amp in trade) for this amp is $400.00. Is this a reasonable deal and any opinions on this amp w/ special design speakers?

I'm looking for a clean amp (pun intended) w/ great reverb to use w/ my B/G bender and new Hamel pups.
Vintage and collectable status of no concern here....just tone. Unfortunately, I may not have the opportunity to play through it prior to the purchase. Much thanks and hope to post more in the future.

77 Twin

According to this site the 77 Twin Reverb should be one of the 135 watt versions.

I had one years ago, they are superclean, and LOUD!
If you want clarity and headroom, this should do it.
Some folks don't care for them because they used an ultralinear transformer and have master volume but they are well made, point to point circuit boards.
And it sounds like from your description that it has the JBL speakers - the speakers alone are worth $3-400 if they are in good condition.
Oh and they do have real good reverb too!

Ringo,

Thanks for the reply. I talked to the store tech. The speakers are not JBL's....and they were unable to identify them beyond the Fender special design logo.
Is there any other method of identifying speaker brand?

I'm considering holding off on the purchase to check out a SFVR or SFSR amp which may be a more practical amp for all applications ( especially home use). But you can't beat a twin for clean and reverb .... and prices are not out of control like some of the other BF/SF amps.

Any other suggestions and amp advice from those w/ experience welcomed. Thanks guys and great forum!

speaker codes

the Weber site has a link with speaker codes
http://www.webervst.com/morecode.html
there should be a number stamped on the frame, for instance, look at this Fender Special Design speaker on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=38074

the code is 465 so it is an Oxford, not a real desireable speaker, though some of them sound ok.
