5E3 Tweed Deluxe Transformers

I am building a Tweed Deluxe 5E3 and want some opinions on transformers.

Under consideration are the Hammond #270X power tranny (41VA, sec. 240-0-240, DC ma 40, Fil.#1(rct) 5.0v @ 2a, Fil.#2(htr) 6.3v @ 1.5a.) and #1620 (20W, 6600 ct, 4/8/16 ohm, max. DC per side 158mA) P-P output tranny. Both are less than $75 from www.angela.com.

Any other suggestion or source for reasonably priced 5E3 suitable transformers?

TIA

Gary

Hoffman amps

I have the units Doug sells. They are correct-spec for a Tweed in either laydown or standup styles. The Laydown comes in multi-tap primaries for different voltages. Doug also sells chassis, components and has a great amp-builders forum and technical referrence info as well as board building supplies on his page.

Plus his service is extremely fast - it's all he does.

I recently rebuilt a 5B3 w/ one of these Matchless/Westlabs output transformers, it is very nice. A whole lot more sound than a stock variety.

MM...

I have a Mercury Magnetics power transformer in my 5D3 - it's wound exactly to '55 specs. IMO MM does a tremendous job at nailing vintage-type reproductions.

MM Trannies

By far and wide the best available, I don't use anything else. When they say it is dead on, it IS. Their outputs are outrageous. They are winding all the trannies for the Crumblers.

I put a MM OT in a Vibrolux Reverb, and my jaw about hit the floor when I fired it up! To call it "dead on" is probably an insult. It was a huge improvement over a stock Fender OT, in fact it was on the fringe of sounding like a Super Reverb. I was astounded!

Thanks for the feedback. The Mercury Magnetics transformers are excellent. MM manufactured the transformers for us at The Great American Sound Coompany, when I worked there. My problem is that they are expen$ive.

I should have emphasized "low cost" as I'm still paying off my new Telecaster.

Another vote for the MM trannies. Put a set in a restored '64 AC30 and they really sounded great. Not for the budget minded, but definitely worth the expense.

if you can get in with a group of people to get the 5 tranny discount (20% off) they are really pretty resonable. i know that i'm going to be buying some for a 5E3 project, but i won't be able to buy until after tax time. if that is around your time frame we could go in together.

if you're looking to go sooner i saw resently on the webervst tranny page that someone posted that they want to buy some MM tranny's in the next week or two. you could go over there and contact that guy and see if you want to go in with him. [edit] tom pierce is his name.

http://www.webervst.com/vstbbs/bbs.html

also, if i remember correctly, there is a JTM45 yahoo group that has ordered enough that they get the 20% off (or something like that). you could do a search for them and find out what the deal is.

i too am on a budget but i looked around and when you add in the 20% off, and factor in how dead on they are, to me there isn't any reason to buy anything else.

And it remains one of the best, chewiest, most lovely amps I've ever plinked on. Tom also threw in a set of alnico Webers (P12S/P12B) and I think its the best AC30 I've ever had the pleasure of putting the womp on. Sold my Matchless DC-30 and picked up Tom's rebuild.

He has good hands, a good head, a Big Heart and used Most Excellent MM iron.

Hmm...think I might toss in with lowercase tom of skullisland on his gang order for MM iron...
