Looking for one good amp: advice on three options....
I'm looking to purchase one fantastic amp, and have narrowed my list to three:
Allen Accomplice Fuchs Overdrive Supreme mod to my HRDx Ceriatone Overdrive Special I currently play in a typical bar/cover band whose drummer uses a Roland digital set, so we're only medium loud. All amps are miced. I play mostly blues and classic rock in the band, although I love and can play soul and some jazz, and would love to (and hope to) do more of it. I do play a little country as well. I have a PRS, a home made Tele, and will probably pick up a Strat soon. Love (and enjoy cramping my hand trying to play like) Hendrix, John Mayer, Larry Carlton, Joe Perry, Danny Gatton, Steve Cropper, SRV, Cornell Dupree. Seems like the Fuchs mod would be easiest. THe problem is that all these choices would be easier made if I could hear/play them before hand, which I can't. These questions are always stupid, but I ask 'em anyways.... Thanks! |

From your choices, I'd go with the Allen Accomplice... probably in the 1x15 configuration, because that's what I'm partial to (I have a BFPR clone in an Allen 1x15 combo cab). Add a couple of nice pedals, and it's an incredibly versatile setup.

Haven't heard the Fuchs or the Ceriatone, but I have an Accomplice and it's a great amp and can dial in a lot of tones. If you want it to be spot on blackface you will have to do a couple of minor mods, but they work very well in a mix stock. You might want to consider the bigger transformers depending on the headroom you like. The amp will start cranking out 40 watts with 6L6's and can push even more with KT66's and a solid state rectifier. For the minimal weight gain, you have more power on tap if you need it for a bigger venue. David's 40 watt OT is considerably bigger than a Vibrolux or Vibroverb OT, closer to a Bassman.

I know it's not on your list, and I shouldn't do this but, I play similar music to what you play in smaller clubs (100 to 200 people) and I have enjoyed great success with my Rivera Chubster 40. It costs about $1200 and the only time I need to mic it is when we're playing outdoors or at larger clubs.
Here's 8 sound clips that were done with the amp and no effects on the rhythm tracks. Just channel switching and a tweak of the gain or EQ. The amp was so versatile in the studio that the engineer bought one to have on hand. http://www.therockaholics.com/sounds.cfm |
