Brown Princeton Vs. Brown Deluxe
I have a 6G2, but it's definitely not loud enough to play an unmic'd gig. I like the sound but want a little more volume and low end.
Sooo...I'm thinking about selling the 6G2 and looking around for a Deluxe. I hear the 6G3 is mucho raunchy. What are the major differences? Good idea? |

It is,but I think you'd have to run a brown Deluxe flat out all the time even if it were mic'ed.Something that old would probably not last long being gigged under those circumstances. Might be worthwhile to think about a more muscular brownface or perhaps one or another of the boutique amps.
My personal thought, having gigged with brownfaces when they were new,is that back in the day,any kind of breakup was seen as a warning that an amp was being stressed way beyond its limits and was to be avoided. |

I think that you could get away with gigging a brown Deluxe, depending on what kind of places you want to play it at, expecially if you aren't looking for cleans at higher volumes (and it doesn't sound like you are).
My brownie is noticeably louder than a tweed Deluxe clone that I built, both in clean headroom and when pushed. I used to have a 6G2 Princeton and I would say that the 6G3 Deluxe sounds pretty similar, but it sounds fuller and bigger, probably due to the 12" speaker. I've got a Weber 12A150B in mine if I remember correctly which probably adds a bit of overall volume to the amp. I play mostly rythm and have used the 6G3 Deluxe many times in polebarn jams with my friends and have played a couple of outdoor yard parties with no volume problems. I can set it right on the edge of breakup and use a good boost pedal along with turning the guitar volume up from 8 or 9 and it will crunch fine. I read somewhere that Ted Nugent used one to record most of the Cat Scratch Fever album...I don't know if that's true or not, but that tone is easily attainable with a humbucker guitar, the amp on around 7-8, and no pedals at all. Plus, I really like the cleans right before it starts to get crunchy. You may want to look at the www.Allenamps.com website and check out the Hot Fudge with Nuts. It's supposed to be a pretty good clone of a brown Deluxe with a few tweaks and it seems like everybody who has one loves it. |
