Champion 600 with Jensen MOD - a/b video

Stock Champion 600 (the before video)

Slideshow of the thrilling speaker swap - Yippee!

Champion 600 with the MOD speaker (the after video)

I don't know if you can hear the difference on YouTube but I like the change.

It's not a huge difference, but I definitely like the MOD better. Well done!

Now you just need to get a Weber and do a THIRD video! :)

Good job on the review. Nice playing as well. I have a Champion 600. I tried the Webber Alinco speaker and changed the tubes. I'm using a JJ12AX7 and a Tungsol 6V6. That's as much modding as it needs to me. I also run the amp through an old amp cab that has 2 x 10" Celestion Vintage 30's in it. A speaker change makes a big difference.

The difference is slight (although I realize that YT always has poor audio) but I do hear a difference. I say its 20 beans well spent.
BTW, nice job keeping all other factors CP. I had both clips going, pausing one and then the other to hear the differences.

Hard to say but it the mod seems to have more and tighter bass.. that is what struck me most. I bit better highend but again.. that might be just the recording.

Thanks for this! I think I like the overdriven sound better with the Mod in it.
Did you perceive any changes in volume with the Mod?

I also have a Jensen MOD in my Champion 600.
The difference is much bigger in 'real life' than you can hear from the Youtube videos.
Deeper + thighter bass, less compressed mids and also a clearer highend - in general, the whole frequency spectrum gets wider compared to the stock speaker.
Huge improvement.

The MOD is louder and tighter.

This will sound lame and silly but....

If you guys were here listening to the MOD Champion....you would be able to hear that it's better.

I listen to the videos on YouTube and they sound very similar. In real life, the change is noteworthy.

I have a $99 Aiptek camcorder that I let the kids take to school functions....it records in YouTube, DVD and HD quality levels but it's just a simple gadget like those new Flip cameras. I have abandoned my good Canon digital tape camcorder since I got the Aiptek because the Aiptek is so darned handy.

I've never hooked up a mixer to a camcorder and really "produced" sound for a YouTube video. I should try it sometime.

I like the tighter bottom.

How are we supposed to compare these videos when you have a different shirt on each time!!?!

Seriously, thanks. I think these are going to be useful vids for a lot of people, and I think I need a little Jensen speaker for my champ....

I've done the same mod myself. I too am happy with the improvement although there was a thread a while back where someone was saying they didn't see any change. I tried selling my original speaker on EBay but there were no takers. I tried the upgrade with a friend's strat initially but when I played it with the tele it sounded perfect - my sound!

It would sound even better if he changed the grill cloth.

You have no idea how fussy and flakey I am. My grill cloth has a crooked crease going accross it....like they cut the grills from reams of fabric that are folded and rolled for shipping. I got a grill with a crease going right through the center. The crease goes uphill from left to right.

I yanked the amp out of the shipping box like a kid at Christmas and stared at the grill with the big line on it and said to myself........"hey what the hell is that.....it looks like someone ironed a crease in a pair of trousers and I got the trouser crease grill.....what the hell.....".

I am still having moments of dispair over this odd quality.

I need therapy. Bigtime therapy.

Told you Jensens were cool speakers. Thanks for clearing up the "foam surround" issue. Next project for you to address: the Crate V18/ Palomino vs. Victoria dilemma. You should start your own guitar-oriented version of "Mythbusters". I'd watch.

You're kind (I'm a hack).

I'm sold on the MOD's....I had a 1-12 Lopo Cab with a MOD, I have a MOD in a mid 70's Champ and I built a 2 x 8 cab for an Epi Valve Junior head and I loaded it with the same 8" MODs that I use in the silver face Champ. I like 'em.

The MOD's in the little 2 x 8 were nice with the Epi Valve Junior. I built the cab....it cost 2 times what I expected, decided that I wanted to try a Lopo cab and I sold the 2 x 8 on ebay. I got nutty building the 2 x 8 and I actually bought a used Roto Zip saw on ebay to cut the speaker holes perfectly round. I learned a lot but I was upside down financially on that cab. I remember looking at my shabby cab and then looking at the sexy Lopo cabs that cost less than what I spent on the home build. I was thinking...."what have I done????.....I'm a loon".

The dreaded MOD home build......

Don't look at it too closely.

Here's the grill shot......

There's nothing like shopping grill cloth. I was the only man in a huge fabric store on the south side of Milwaukee. It was me and 72 white haired old ladies looking through fabric selections. It smelled like little old lady pefume. It was lovely. I started digging through big scraps of vinyl thinking.....I could really cover a guitar amp with this stuff.....look at all the textures........

I really needed to leave the sewing shop at that point. It was getting creepy. "I like shopping for fabric....this is cool".....(wait a minute....time to go)...

I use a MOD 12-50 in a closed cab with my Valve Jr. and I'm looking at four MOD 8s for a couple of new double 8" cabs I scored at a pawn shop.
