Crate V18 speaker mod

Ok what I want to do is put a new speaker in my V18 maybe brighten up the sound a bit. So what would you all suggest. Don't have a lot of dough so would like to get it correct the first time. Any help is appreciated or suggestions. It obviously has the stock speaker in it now. Haven't done any mods save for the mod for the to much bass thing and put an accutronix 4 spring in it. It has all the stock tubes in it except in the V3 position and that is a 12AY7 I believe. Mainly interested in the speaker suggestions. thanks

Did you give it time to break in first? I put an 12AY7 in position 1 and sound is actually pretty to my liking right now (at least for what I paid!). Since I have a V18-212, I found it a tad too much to spend for 2 new speakers while the stocks werent broken in yet. Now, it seems just fine.

You can't go wrong with Weber Signature speakers.
Beautiful sounds for very short sheckels.

+100. My buddy's V18 sounds great with a ceramic Weber Sig12, a 12AU7 in V1 (tube directly under "gain" knob on amp), 12AY7 in V2 and a 12AX7 in V3. Sig 12's are like $35 or $40 and worth every penny. I'd actually recommend the ceramic over the Alnico version as I believe they add a bit of clean volume headroom to that amp (especially when using the lower gain tubes).

As far as the original speaker, I've heard people say they can sound Ok once broken in. I just can't get past the plastic cone myself.

I haven't gotten to the amp mods yet - been too busy working on a couple guitar projects. But I did swap in a Peavey Scorpion speaker, and it even though the bassiness of the amp is still there, it did open up the tone quite a bit. Once I get a couple mods done, I'll reassess the Scorpion. But I'll probaby leave it in.
