one channel amps?

cornford out of england is the only company i know of that makes a one channel amp (richie kotzen model), and it pricey!...i play through a distorted channel, got it turned to 5 or 6 for my "dirty" sound and down to about 2 or 3for "clean", other than that i dont touch the clean channel at all....oh yeah i play through a 52ri with a carvin nomad amp...is there any company that makes a one channel amp?

Yeah there are MANY companies that make/made single channel amps. Too many to list. Here's a hint, you do realize that way back in the day ALL tube amps were single channel? Look at the current reissues or clones of these amps. Some cheaper practice amps are single channel, yet there are some really high end amps that are single channel too (like DrZ that backline and smoke mentioned above). There is a plethora. My Mesa-Boogie Blue Angel and Fender Champ 600 are single channel.

If you're looking for a new amp and want it to be single channel, then let us know what sound your looking for or musical style and I'm sure the helpful folks here can narrow things down and steer you in the right direction.

smsuryan - the chase is finding the one channel for YOU. Many have found that in Marshall or Fender camps because thats what they heard on the radio growing up. Others describe it to expert builders or build it themselves. Single channel amps are about seeking that perfect pocket within an amp signal that can do it all for you and your technique. And that's really what it's all about anyway.

Heck, add an OD pedal into any single channel amp and you pretty much have your second channel right there.

thanks again guys...i like that "in-between" sound...not too dirty not too clean...think albert collins/robben ford.....not a solid state but something that has a nice tube clipping and smooth decay...gosh i wish i could describe it better...its hard to type what youre hearing in your head yknow...im not super picky because the tone is in your hands, but i do want something tough and reliable...really i love the sound of my nomad but channel 1 doesnt get used...

The only downside of a single channel amp - speaking form recent experience - is if the amp is factory set up to overdrive very easily. I have a single channel Peavey Windsor combo that sounded wonderful for rock but lacked clean headroom. That's not something that you can correct with a pedal - underdrive anyone?

It is much more flexible after changing the valves - 5751 and 12AT7 in place of the 12AX7's and a 6L6 in place of the stock EL34. Stil has a great overdrive but now it has way more headroom. In addition the new valves have altered the sustain and tone in a wholely positive way - far better than the stock valves in every respect.

Incidently, I was only able to do that work confidently because of the help I got here - directly and through reading various posts. Without this forum I'd probably still be trawling the internet looking for advice worth trusting or else I'd may have wasted a lot of time and money.

indeed, sir..... ive learned a lot from this forum...there not just a bunch of yahoos with half information, ive been to a ton of other guitar forums that arent nearly as educated as the bunch here...or as classy, frankly...i wish there was a tdpri convention here in missouri, i know we have a few members here...
so whats a decent single channel amp for around/under $700-800 that has a decent wattage to play at a club or practice at home? any advice? thanks again in advance

I love my Blues Junior and I loved my Pro Junior.

I used to think that a one channel amp and a distortion pedal were a lesser or imitation way to get distortion until several people on the forum pointed out this......

you do realize that way back in the day ALL tube amps were single channel?

Hendrix played a single channel amp and a pedal....everyone did back then.

I'm loving my Blues Junior and BBE Green Screamer these days.

I'd first recommend trying to determine f you prefer 6v6 or el84 based power tubes, then figure you if you want a 5 watt class a, or a 15 watt Class AB push pull.

I'd recommend getting something with both level/vol and a gain/drive.

Lastly, I'd recommend getting a head, then two cabs- a 1-10 for home and a 1-12 or 2-12 for practice and gigs. I like alnico in open back and ceramic in closed back. Obviously cab and speaker are both very important here.

Here are a few options:
1)
You could get a blackheart handsome devil head, a blackheart 1-10 cab, and a blackheart 1-12 cab all for under $700. Spend the leftover money on tube upgrade, nice speaker cables, and maybe a pedal of your choice

2) Get the Egnater Rebel, find the best 1-12 cab you can of craigslist for $150, spend whatever is left on tubes.

3) Spend all you money getting the best PTP combo you can- Fender SF (PR would be my call), Ceriatone, 18 watt clone, Vintage Traynor($800 should get you a YGM-3, a Weber speaker upgrade, and a tech tune-up)

Some (lots of) old Marshalls and its reissues are single channel amps. Got myself a single channel JCM800. Most people find single channel amps more dynamic and better sounding then channel switchers.

Not to be finicky, but my limited experience as a guitarist has led me to conclude that multi-channel amps aren't really less dynamic/expressive, I just get lazier around them.

One night, a few years back, I got to play a few tunes on guitar through my buddies Mesa Nomad. Now, we'd tweaked the tubes on that nomad pretty heavily, so it was ready to go, but it was set up for his hot-PAF-equipped LP. My strat (years ago...I'm reformed now, honest) wouldn't "fit" into any of the channels, so I turned on #2 and dialed down my quitar volume and there it was. I played 5 songs, with clean rhythym tones and gain-y lead tones without hitting the footswitch, just using the guitar vol pot. Treated it like a single channel amp, basically.

So--if you're desire is mostly dirty with occasional cleans, a Marshall-esque unit, like an 18watter, would be my recommendation. If you're mainly a clean guy, I'd suggest something blackfacey. If you're a bass-playing hack like myself that occasionally gets to play guitar, I'd keep a multi-channel switcher around...it'll make your life easier in the long run. I use a Rivera R30 1x12 for the most part.

just checked out the blues junior on youtube..sounds nice!! yeah theres a lot to pick from so i might take awhile in choosing, dont wanna invest my $$$ than regret it later!
