I have a BFDR with an Altec 417 8C speaker. I had the aluminum dome changed to paper (big improvement).
My starting point is usually as follows: Volume 3-4 Treble 5-6 Bass 3-4 Reverb Usually off (I prefer delay) Speed 4-5 Intensity 6-7 I play country, rock and blues using a 335 or a parts Tele, and I'm usually on the bridge pickup. |

I have a '68 Deluxe Reverb and I use a Tele/Strat(w/ back tone control working on both bridge and middle pickups)/Danelectro. use all pickup positions...
AMP (Vibrato Channel): Vol. 3-5 Treble- 5-6 Bass- 4-5 Reverb 2.5-4 max ( for surf) Trem. Speed 3-4 Trem. Intensity- 8-9 Note: I put the amp volume where I need it to produce the maximum clean volume I need for the gig (I have a high wattage Emi speaker, nice tight bass...),and prefer to "toggle" between this sound and a "2nd" dirty channel with an OD pedal...That way I always have a clean tone to use for some music, as well as have a great breakup, at any volume

Each amp is different,
Depends on the speaker your using, maybe even the tubes, each reverb tank is different, Original or re-issue amp? Pick attack, your style of playing. What's a good setting on one amp may not be on another. All you can do is use your ears each time/ |

DRRI with JJ's tubes and bright cap removed:
V:4 T:4 B:4 R:2 or less. Then adjust vol & tone from the Tele. (Depending on song and p/up choice.)

I have a DRRI, which is totally stock. Haven't even changed the tubes yet.. My favourite settings for a woody, Luther Perkins-y, rock 'n' roll tone are as follows.
Vibrato channel, input 2 Volume 5 Treble 5 Bass 3 Reverb 3 Don't use the vibrato much with these settings, but if I do they're on 3 as well. I also use an echo pedal for rock 'n' roll stuff. And using my trusty Esquire of course. |

Volume - 8
Treble - 6 Bass - 8 Reverb - 3 Control the overall levels from the guitar. Connect a Bad Monkey overdrive pedal if you are hankering for some fat overdriven sounds and go for it. |

For home playing with single coils:
V 4. T 4 (5 for normal channel). B 7. R 1.5 to 2. Then step on the Sweet Honey OD pedal if I want to juice it up a little. For gigging, I just turn the volume up and the bass down as my ears dictate.

I'm waiting for the Tweed Champ settings thread.

But you bring up a good point (along with Inventour) that I've also found that to be the case between amps. I'm not sure if it's just a a variation in potentiometers, or minor variations between production years or variations in other components. I can understand the OP's desire to get out of a rut, But you've really got just Bass and Treble to worry about. It's not like it's a Mesa Boogie with two rows of 43 knobs. (I bet these threads on their forum take up a lot more space) I can't imagine, say, always running the volume knob on 4. I guess you could use it as a starting point, which is probably how most people would take these: more guideline than rule. The other thing is the "wherever you go, there you are" factor. It's often an axiom here that "Just because you get the same rig as (Insert Favorite guitarist's name here), doesn't mean you'll sound like him." You could also replace "rig" with "settings" and be just as valid. I know this is a little like watching a cartoon and telling the other kids: "Mice can't talk.", but does anybody read these, race to your amp and go: "Damn, I never thought of using the treble at 4 before." Do all you guys remember those settings, or did you have to go look at your amps? Also, every time I look at any of mine, they always seem to be somewhere other than where I'd left them. Sometimes they are so weird, like Reverb on 8 and Bass on 2, that it seems improbable that just random brushing against them could acount for it. Mice? Aliens? Rival Guitarists? If it was the volume knob, I'd suspect the lead singer. I sometimes wish that I was lke you guys that always use the same setttings. I'd just superglue the knobs in one place and be done with it. |
