Weber vs. Jensen Speaker
I'm looking for an inexpensive speaker, for a DC-3 (4 EL84's) amp. I would like to make it a little more Voxey sounding. It came with a Celestion Vintage 30. I have tried a Celestion Seventy/80 (that I have in another amp), and like the sound better.
I am considering a Weber Sig 12B, or a Jensen MOD 12. Which speaker would you recommend? Would a 50 watt speaker be adequite? Thanks! |

Any time I'm faced with a choice of reissue Jensen with Weber as the other option... I'll go with Weber every time. The 12B may be close to what you want.
I'd spend a couple more bucks and go for a Weber Silver Bell. It all depends on what you want. A 50 watt Silver Bell can easily handle 4xEL84s. I really like Eminence Legend 105s, two at a time, for EL84 amps. A lot of guys tell me they prefer 12"s and they wouldn't consider 10"s. Consider this: 2x Legend 105s handle 150 watts per pair. Compare that to a 12" speaker that handles that kind of power. The 10"s are articulate when used with lower powered amps yet you won't blow them with higher powered amps. Chalk that up as "win/win". A 2x10" cabinet is lighter and a lot easier to lug around to gigs and jams than a 2x12". It can be just a little larger than a 1x12". 2x10" trumps 1x12". Win/win. |

muchxs,
Funny that you should mention a 2X10 cabinet. I have a Lopo Line closed back 2X10 cabinet, with 16 ohm Legend 105's (8 ohm cabinet). It's what I use for outdoor shows, when I want more projection than an open backed combo. This is the sound that I like. I would also consider an Eminence Legend GB128. |

http://www.tdpri.com/forum/amp-centr...hamp-head.html At a glance it doesn't look like anything special. It has a couple tweaks to nudge the open back tone to where I want it. Closed back is a different story, it's a tougher more British tone. Gregg seems to like his. If you like closed back tone... if you like British tone... the GB128 is a good choice. Weber's Silver Bell is more like a really good Greenback, I've compared them side by with real British Greenbacks. To my ears they cop that vibe really well. Either way I prefer a Silver Bell over a Vintage 30. Great speaker. |
