67 Bassman making static-y sound when playing?
When playing through my 67 Bassman head, I get a pronounced static-y, distorted sound when playing chords, almost like the speaker is distorting (but it's not the speaker - I tried another amp through the same speaker and it's fine). I swapped in two other power tubes in the Bassman, but the distorted sound is still there. Any thoughts on the most likely causes for that particular symptom?
Thanks... |

Have you sprayed potentiometer cleaner into the controls recently? Mine did as you described yours doing and I found my cure in cleaning the volume controls thoroughly. A second possiblility is that one of the pre-amp tubes is verging on failure. Try tapping each one lightly with a pencil eraser with the volume up just enough to hear if the tube has gone microphonic. Good (and regular) maintenance is its own reward :)
