Jumper?

I ran across this pic and wondered if jumping the two channels allows for distortion or maybe it was just plugged in for convenience. Never saw it before.

On blackface Fenders, I believe the two channels are out of phase, although they can be re-wired. Some people do that and run a delay into one channel so they can have greater EQ and blend options on their wet signal. If both channels are in phase, you can send more signal to the power amp, but you're not going to get a cascading gain effect from one channel to the other.

Only the reverb models are out of phase. You can jumper any Showman, Bassman, Bandmaster, Tremolux... And Reveb models can be modded to be in phase. Bruce Collins did that to my Bandmaster Reverb. He also revoiced one of the channels and they sound awesome together.

I like to run a delay between the two channels so I can blend it with the dry signal.

I liked my DRRI but was slightly disheartened by the way it responded to some of my favorite pedals. I did some EXTENSIVE research with the search function on this site and came across this tidbit.

I experimented last night and came up with the best sounding tone I've ever played. My wife even got up from her girly movie and commented on it. I ran my tele->BOSS CS-3->Bad Monkey->EH Echo 1 Delay->Input 1 Normal Channel, I then ran a short cable from Input 2 Normal to Input 1 Vibro Channel.

I finally got to hear the Reverb on this amp after having it almost 5 weeks, I thought it was broken. I swore I wouldn't tell on myself, but this is too funny. I'm warning you, you're gonna think I'm a dumbbutt from way back. On the DRRI footswitch there are two buttons with a sticker in between. On one side of the sticker it has "REV" on the other side of the sticker it has "VIB". I thought they were two separate deals so when I was thinking I was turning REV on and then turning VIB on, I kept turning it off. I know, stupid. But at least I know what good reverb sounds like now.

I like Keith Urban a lot, but never really chased his tone, but I nailed the tone to "I told You So." After I figured out how to use my own amp.

When I jumper the channels on my four input Marshall 1987, it does create a good deal more gain. It's not like an extra gain stage because the inputs are run parallel rather than in linear fashion, but I think it adds gain because it doubles the magnitude of the signal. That's my guess at least.

I don't understand how jumpering (jumping?) works. The jumper cable always seems to go from an input to another input. How does the signal come out of the input? Shouldn't it go from the output of the first channel to the input of the second channel?

The "output" of the first channel is an internal circuit which essentially then goes to the power amp--there's no output jack you can tap into and then feed into the input of channel two (that's the basic ideal behind cascading gain stages). Jumpering is like having a Y-cord plugged into your amp. The two inputs on each channel are connected internally--it wasn't really planned that someone would plug two things into the same channel of blackface, but it can be done.
