Anyone for 10's (wouldn't that be nice) Blonde content
Just got my 62 Tremolux w/2x10 cab in my continuing search for brownsound. This is the amp that is supposed to be the same as the brown vibrolux but in a head and combo configuration. Very nice amp with a few minor issues. It currently has a solid state rectifier and some tight 80's JBL MI 10's in the cab. I am having the caps done and putting a 5ar4 in it's rightful place. The amp has a real nice sound already, but it isn't quite giving up it's trick yet. I am after that creamy break up that happens on these amps when turned up to 7-8 and it is holding tight. I swapped the 5ar4 in from another amp and it started to happen. I am wondering what 10's will put this thing in full on brown territory without being overly fuzzy. I am thinking a Weber, but he has so many it is hard to know which. This amp has some kick and is a bit louder than the Brown Vibrolux I have heard even with the added sag of the tube rectifier. It appears to have larger (original) transformers than the Vibrolux.

that's my vote, anyway.

Thanks, I am definitely looking into the Webers. I bought some P 12B "blue dogs" off Ted a while back for my Marshall and they are great.
Mark, what are your favorite replacement transformers for vintage brown Fenders (Concert and Super specifically) ? I have been finding that these amps are going for a lot less with replacement transformers and your earlier post has me thinking. |
