Speaking of Pro Reverbs . . .
I made a trade with a friend, my home-brew 5E3 for his '74 Pro Reverb. The Pro Reverb has US rectifier and output tubes and is fitted with a pair of new issue Jensen C12N speakers. I've blackfaced the phase inverter and bias feed sections, and I added a couple of resistors to the Reverb control circuit so the Reverb doesn't get so intense early on the dial. I'm waiting for the umpteenth day for FedEx to deliver my caps (they've been placed on the delivery truck 4 days running, but have never made it to my door!), so I can give it a full cap job.
I'm very pleased to have an example of one of the classic amplifier sounds. This amp sounds exactly as I expected (and hoped) it would. It has that thumping, sparkly BF/SF thing happening all over. The only option I might yet consider is an output transformer upgrade, but the stock one seems, so far, to be holding its own. Eventually I do intend to replace the eyelet board, which is seriously warped, and to rewire the amp with cloth-insulated solid core wire. I know that's a lot of work, and I know it's not necessary. But I like that sort of project. Besides, silverface amps are a rat's nest inside, and I have a low tolerance for that. This is more like it: ![]() [Click picture for fullsize image.] Bob Arbogast |

Nice deal!
I had one....great amp. Overkill for a basement wanna-bee like me but huge tone. Actually, the '66 Pro Reverb was much better than my '65 BFDR but the BFDR was more valuable so it stayed.

Not the new homebrew
The 5E3 I built about a year ago. My latest homebrew is a 5E3/5E5 hybrid. That one I still have, and plan to keep.

how about a wide panel Super?
I took my Allen Accomplice to Doug Roccaforte for some work and he had an original either 54 or 55 (standy switch) wide panel super right down to the speakers and handle. He told me it was for sale, but cinse right now I can barely keep my boat afloat I didn't ask how much, in fact he has a bunch of classic stuff for sale like an original JTM 45, major drool for me on that one. If anyone is in need of an amp tech I give Doug high marks, he did the work right in front of and explained everything as he went along, I was an electronic tech years ago (not much difference between amps and sonar stacks), and he was very reasonable price wise and fast. Right now I feel the need for tweed. It would be very cool to run a tweed deluxe type amp alongside BF Deluxe style Allen to get the sound I want.
Greg.
