Dream Amp Idea
Basically a Princeton Reverb, with a midrange knob and a longer dwell reverb tank... and maybe a fully remove-able master volume. I'm an amp nerd and builder, so that is simple enough.
However, I also love my Champ, and would love to have a Champ with the Princeton preamp. Since the Princeton uses 6V6s, I wonder if there's a way to lift one power tube and switch the remaining tube to operate in single ended, cathode biased, class a mode. If that did happen, the transformer would only be using half the primary, so I don't know, mathematically, what load the secondary would want to have to operate. Is this one of those instances where I'd need to square or take a square root of the primary to secondary ratio to figure out the desired load. I'm good with math, I'm good with electronics, I'm just not solid on the theory and application of the transformer re-purposing. Cheers! Ben Adrian |

It's not just that; the OT has to be able to take the constant high current of a single-ended Class A amp. SE OTs are built different than PP OTs. Compare a Hammond 125ESE to a Deluxe OT - both are ~15 watt trannys, but the Hammond is much bigger.
Maybe it would work anyway. steven
