Help. How to change tubes in vox ac30cc

Hello all,

I just bought a used vox ac30cc and it sounds good, I think that it may have a bad preamp tube. but how do you get at them

I got the head not a combo.

any help would be greatly appreciated

I don't have a Custom Classic, but I do have a British made ac15, and if the CC is the same as far as changing tubes (which I think it is), you have to actually remove the chassis to get at the tubes. It's a big pain, and you certainly hope a tube doesn't die in the middle of a gig. I think the tube inaccessibility "feature" of Vox amps is a regrettable design.

Edit: I just re-read your post and see that you have the head and not the combo. Not sure how you change tubes in the head version but it doesn't seem like it would be as bad as the combo.

I don't have the head version of those but I do have the combo. You have to slide the chassis out to reach the tubes. Just take a phillips screwdriver and unscrew the screws that hold the chassis in (it's on a wood shelf that slides out, so if you unscrew it from that, no harm done, just put those back in). I don't have one in front of me to give you exact locations but it's not rocket science- unscrew all phillips head screws that look like they hold the chassis in and slide it out. If you've taken out some that don't need to come out to do that, remember which ones for next time.

It's similar for the head version. Disassemble the cabinet to get the chassis out and away you go. Pain in the ass, but such is life when you have Vox love!

I have the Vox AC-15CC. I took the chassis out yesterday to change the preamp tubes in it. It was really pretty easy- just 4 screws. I put 2 Mullard ECC83s in it. Sounds a lot better!
