Small tube amp advice
This has been asked a zillion times on this forum so I'll make it a zillion and one....
What are some new good, small tube amps that have a good sixties rock and roll clean sound? I need good, juicy reverb and, if possible, a good tremolo. I guess besides a sixties rock and roll sound, a good Don Rich twang would be a close description. I think you Tele players know what I mean! I am looking for either a 1 - 12" or 2 - 10" speaker amp, between 20 and 50 watts, and less than 40 lbs. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

I might get kicked for this one, but here goes -
Peavey Valveking. While the Classics cover a lot of ground, the Valveking does just about all you are asking for - 60's R&R, ~40 watts, light weight, twang enough to satisfy Johnny Hiland, and actually decent 'verb for a modern affordable mass produced amp. No trem, but so many cool pedals out there that do that as well as most amps, anyway. Even though it's MIC, I think that Peavey really got it right with these amps - minimal controls, a pair of 6L6's, and no digital poo mixed in with the sauce. Personally though - I'd still go out of my way to get a decent SF DR or VR, leaning towards the VR with the killer 2X10 config.

my 2 favorites
these 2 fit the bill you describe
Can't say enough positive things about them ( I use these the most ...3 piece blues band ....) 1) Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue ( 1-12 ) 2) Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb ( 2-10s )

Samamp VAC30. Been gigging with one for the last year. Extremely versatile little guy, you can choose from 3,6,12,20 or the full 30 watts with the variable amp clipping doodad knob. Check 'em out if you get a chance.

I'd say that you should check out the Kustom 36 Coupe.Nice clean and overdriven tones, nice reverb,XLR out too. I'm happy with mine. If you don't mind the retro tuck and roll kind of thing...

If price is no object, the ultimate clean shimmery amp with both 25 and 12 watt option at the flick of a switch, is the Carr Rambler. It does the Deluxe Reverb thing in a bulletproof way. It is PTP and comes in many configurations with different cabinets and coverings.

Peavey Classic 30, So-Cal 50 head (run through a 15" speaker it sounds fantastic), Blues Jr., or a Peavey Windsor Studio (which I'm a hairs' breadth of pulling the trigger on).

+1 on the peavy delta blues 2 x 10 and 1 x 15, especially the tweed models -
in a smaller package the gibson ga-5 can be a great deal for a practice/home amp - - i'm not a complete idiot ... some parts are missing - |

Silverface Vibrolux 67-80 - these are good values right now and range from as low as 750.00 to a tad over a thousand bucks. They are gorgeous sounding amps, plenty of punch and can fill the shoes of the Deluxe or the twin, in terms of applications.
I bought a 79 for 975.00 and a friend of mine bought a 79 for 880.00, both on ebay. GC usually has a few of them in their stores and they price them from 1199 - 1499 so ebay's the way to go. They not only sound killer but they will also appreciate. With a few very easy mods you can Blackface them. To me they are just a no-brainer right now - that's gonna change real soon I think as they are discovered. Kind of like the SF Princeton's being discovered now and prices are going haywire. The VR is the last of the bunch. |
