Good deal Chet on a clean Princeton.
It's not going to sound like a Princeton Reverb. Mik

Hey guys, give me your opinion about the speaker in this model.
Is it probable that the one in there- if it is original- is better than a new Weber or Jensen or could I improve the performance by getting a reissue speaker for it? I do have a Weber P10Q from when he was able to name them like the originals that I could try in it. |

I'd give it a listening... then pop in the replacement you already have. When you do it, ask a non-musician friend for their advice too. Sometimes a blind taste test is helped by a "lay man" audience member.

Got it home today. The guy didn't exactly do a smart job of packing it. A power tube was lying on the bottom of the cab. I stuck it back in and it worked though.
Now the fun begins- I'm gonna start by trying the Weber speaker in it then try different NOS tubes in her. |

Congratulations of the amp score Chet!
A new speaker, a cap job, and a new bass knob, and you've got a friend for life!

Me too Chet - hell, I can buy early, mid or late SF Vibroluxes for the same or less than SFPR's are going for these days...it's friggin insane, but whatever, I know it's a market thing. But I'll take SFVR's any day for 2-3 PR's of any kind.
If you know how, you can make VR's break up just as early and for the money maybe buy 3 of them and you could have almost one of every amp made if you modify the normal channel to one of about 50 mod options out there. My latest thing is to set them up so I can A/B between the Vibrato and normal channels and it's like having two amps in one. And ohhhhh... those 2x10's....I just love em. You can Marshall-ize the normal channel, Tweed it etc and even an amp newby can do the mods. You can JTM the noramal side in about 1 1/2 hours. |

People have been telling me that the Jensen C10N post 1964 (if you can find them) are just incredible. I have been looking for them for about 6 months now, but every time the guys I know get them in they are gone the same day. That's how dialed in folks are around here in the Fender world.

Wow, what's the deal with the pre and post 1964 Jensen C10N speakers?
I never heard about THAT distinction in models. I have a pair of 1966 C10N's going into a new 2x10 cabinet. I've had them for about 20 years, and they've been used with a variety of amp setups. I've liked them a lot for their relative cleanness and resistance to fart-out, even when driven pretty hard. They were reconed about 15 years ago.

Thats what they are telling me Eugene - that they just smoke without farting out. But he said to make sure you get them post 63 or 64 (can't remember which) and he also cited a Date as the latest too think it was 1970 something. Sounds like yours is in the idal range and aint it not odd that you been playing them for 20 years knowing that they are killer.

Hey Chabby,
They used to be in a 50-watt Kalamazoo Bass 50 amp. I guess they must've selected these speakers so they wouldn't fart out when driven by a bass guitar... I saw the schematic of that Bass 50 amp and apparently, that amp's output transformer was a 16-ohm sucker..... which would mean these speakers were originally wired in series.

Yeah - this guy who is the premier amp guru of the Pacific Northwest and does all work for the famous Seattle bands/celebrities says they are the hot thing for any 2x10 set up. And all of his 2x10 clients are using them. AT least for anything above 30 watts. What are you driving them with Eugene?

I had a Weber C10Q in my spare speaker boxes so I stuck that one in. I also had a pair of 6V6GTA's so I put them in. Topped it off with a Mullard ECC83.
The change in volume and tone was hard to believe! More later. |

Hey Chabby,
I am hoping to get the cab finished by July 3rd. I wanna use it for a gig I've got on the 4th. I'm gonna use it with my 69 Princeton Reverb, which has an 8-ohm, 10-inch Electrovoice speaker in it. I have a Weber Z-matcher which will allow me to run all three 10-inch drivers at the same time. I can't wait to see how it sounds. The 2x10 cab is gonna be an upright Tall Boy format so I stack my Princeton on top. I like being able to get those speakers off the floor a bit. I'll post a photo soon.
