which reverb

Ok I got the Fathers day wish and the OK to get a quality reverb and my choices that I've decided on are..in no particular order...Mr. Springy, van amps or build the Weber reverb. I really would like to do the build but I'm more interested in the quality of the reverb and would forgo the build and buy one of the others if the quality is better than the Weber.....also any other suggestions would be appreciated. thanks ahead of time for all replies..

Cheers

I'm not familiar with the first two. Are they actual outboard reverb units or are they pedals?

I've got an original Fender Reverb Unit from 1964 and I built a Weber Revibe not too long ago. Both of these have better sounding reverb than any pedal I have tried, but that would also depend on what kind of reverb you're looking for.

The Revibe build was a tough one as there is a lot of stuff connected under the board but I think the straight up Reverb Unit clone would be pretty simple. That half of the board went really quick.

I'd look strongly at the Fender RI Reverb units, which sound GREAT with a couple tube upgrades, notably a NOS or UOS RCA 6K6, 12ax7 and 12at7. Mine has one and its outstanding - my Holy Grail is unused with my bassman piggyback at this point.

I'm picking one up tonight. I will be retubing with NOS. How long do tubes usually last in these RI reverb tanks?

Build one...

The old style tube units are the BEST sounding reverb. There is just no competition for them at all in any pedals.

I use a modded Fender RI outboard reverb and Van Amps Sole Mate all the time. The Fender unit (like the best oldies I've tried) is just as good as everybody says. I really love that sound.

The Sole Mate is a little different, not much. It's convenient, quiet, has excellent tone. IMO, it is a most worthy alternative to the traditional tank, to the point where this is the one I use at most gigs.

I appreciate all the responses...I just ordered the weber kit as it is based on the Fender reverb. I deleted the tubes and will get my own elsewhere and I opted for the sprague and mallory caps....I will post as the project moves ahead...I was looking for just spring reverb and I'm sure I'll be happy plus I get to do another build..boy is this addicting I've got a 5e3 and the vibro champ under my belt so this should be fairly quick n easy.....

Cheers

I would think a long time (longer than if you used new production tubes), but I'm not really sure as mine is pretty new too.

I don't think you'll have much trouble with this build. I had to drill some of the mounting holes in my chassis but I built the Revibe and I bought it before the final version of the kit was actually out. The Reverb is actually the simpler portion to build.

I'm not sure how long all of the tubes last but my 1964 still had (and has) the original RCA 6K6 power tube in it so I don't think they are very hard on tubes.
