WOW!
I've just read over at TGP that the Bad Monkey has two outputs - one normal, and the other with speaker simulation, and the folks there are saying that the BM sounds excellent straight to the board. I've never heard that before. Now I'm starting to think seriously about getting a BM.

I'm not sure. I should let someone else more knowledgeable than myself answer that, but I would assume that it would work with the pedal turned off as well, since it has two outputs - speaker simulated and not.
Anyone know for sure???

Couple things to add.
First, I'm pretty sure the Bad Monkey will provide emulation even when it's not engaged. I actually used a similar Digitech pedal DI'd for scratch guitar tracks while tracking drums on my last recording. It almost sounded decent. With the cleaner tones of the Monkey, you might find something you like, though I suspect that anyone using a tube amp won't dig it in the long run. Second, in my years as an audio dude, I've never once been asked to run a guitar amp direct by a major artist, and only about twice from anyone else - and it wasn't pretty when it happened. I'm sure it's possible in some alternate dimension, but I haven't had it work for me. That being said, I really would like to try out the HK Redbox, the JD-10, and/or one of the Palmer boxes. I've always been curious. I actually had a Begringer Ultra-DO (the red one) for a little while, and the clean tones were akin to a JC-120 with a little less sparkle and character. Not something I'd want to use on a recording, but not 100% unsuable-for-any-reason either. For now though, I bring my e906 with me wherever my amp goes. I like the 609 too, but it doesn't seem to have the midrange response that I like. Sounds great on cleans, but to my ear it thins out crunchy tones just a touch - not enough that you won't see it used on many pro stages though. I think the 906 is a serious '57 killer, and I've used it on a number of broadcasts and recordings at work, where I liked it better than the AT 3035s that the other engineers like to point at guitar amps. EDIT: Of course, my amp is a 50watt Marshall half stack, so usually the mic stays in my briefcase and the poor soundfolks look for a way to plug the PA into it.
