Who uses tweed Deluxes with their Tele's?
I've got my project Tele coming soon and I'll be playing it through a Clark Beaufort tweed Deluxe clone. I haven't had a Fender guitar since I got this amp.
How's it going to work through there for ballsy blues playing and clean neck tone ballads? The guitar is going to have a Rio Grande Big Bottom pickup set. |

I love to use my Vickie tweed Deluxe with a Tele. I have gigged with this amp, even though it isn't what one would call powerful. The secret is to get the amp off the floor. I use one of those Ultimate amp stands that gets the amp about 4 or 5 inches off the floor, and tilts it back. A plastic milk crate works just fine, too. Getting it off the floor helps it project better, it helps you hear it better, and it keeps the bottom end from getting too muddy and indistinct.
I run the Tele into the #2 input of the bright channel, with the tone on about 10.5 and the volume a shade below 4. If the volume is set any higher than that, it doesn't get any louder, just muddier. At 4, it is plenty loud, as long as it is off the floor. |

seriously considering a 5E3...
i may build one, or buy a complete chassis.
Winnie Thomas (posts here as Zook, I believe) has a 5E3 head that looks absolutely killer. if i grab this one i may drop in 6L6s and push up the rectifier as well. never really been a tweed guy myself, but i keep listing to Sonny Landreth - he's got an original tweed narrow panel. it would be nice to be able to get that kinda low volume growl with a Tele. to me the secret to great tweed tone is low voltages, simple circuitry, and cathode biasing. hard to go wrong.

You are gonna like the Rio's. I've got that same setup in my 50's Classic, and they are sweet! You will probably have to play around quite a bit with the pup height to get the right tone, I know I did. But once I got 'em in the right spot, They are perfect.

I have a '51 w/ 5B3 and 5C3 features. It honks and grinds beautifully w/ anything I plug into it. Great for reccording and low volume noise making. Not gigable unless the drummer hits like a little girl.

Thanks for the replies! JimS, I'm glad you like the Rio's, I'm sure I'll be able to tweak them into submission
Just as a point of reference for the grit factor, I just found a cool setting on my Beaufort that really grabs you and shakes hard. This is using an Epi Dot with Duncan Seth Lover p'ups, fairly low output humbuckers. I plugged into #2 bright input, then jumped #1 bright to #1 normal. Bright volume from 8-10, normal volume from 5-8, tone 10.5 gives me tremendous amounts of overdrive when I crank the guitar volume but cleans up great when I roll back. Wow! |

I use a homebrew 5E3 with the Paul C mod. Works fine for everything. Not really gigging volume by itself (heaps of punch for rehersals), except for small venues. Used with a sympathetic drummer it works fine, yes. Loves pedals, I put a clean boost in for solos and it kicks.
I built another for my geetar teacher, he uses his Donahue Tele through it and it sounds heavenly. If you want headroom, the 12AY7 in the preamp slot is a must.

I have 2 Clark Beaufort tweed Deluxe clones I use as I my main live amps. In fact, my only amps these days. That and a Klon as my main pedal with Teles and couldn't be happier. One has a Paul C mod as well, and one has an Alnico and the other a Celestion. Interesting many think they lack volume, but never have had that problem. I always mic for out front, but stage volume is always plenty. Depends on who and what style of music too I guess :D

Tweeds aren't my favorite Fenders, but one of my favorite setups is running a Vicky Deluxe together with a BF Deluxe Reverb. The BF provides the top and bottom and the tweed fills in the mids. Works with other BF/SF and Tweed combinations of comparable power. Big sound this way clean or dirty, plus some cool stereo options for delay or chorus.
With multi-amp setups, you may need to fool around with speaker polarity on one or the other to get things moving in the same direction.

Thanks for all the replies! I keep experimenting with my Beaufort, I'm always finding new sounds from it. As you might guess, I haven't had this amp very long
Found a great sound today with my Dot again. Plug into #2 bright, no channel bridging. Bright volume 4-5, Normal volume 9, Tone 9. Actually got a usable amount of clean headroom with this setup, nice grind when you crank the guitar. I've got a Route 66 pedal that I'veeperimented with on this amp, it seems to take the pedal real well. More tweaking to be done in this area I can't wait to get my Tele and run it through this amp. |

I Play a Clark Deluxe with a 68 Princeton Reverb thru a stereo delay and that has been my live set up for awile. The extra amp gives me enough sound to get by on stage.Sound pretty big. I jumper the inputs on the deluxe and run it just a notch over 3 where its right on the edge, any louder as mentioned it just breaks up more. I'm tempted to try the Pauls C mod to get just a touch more clean headroom. My Clark has the Celestian Blue and sounds amazing. Of course I only play a tele, in fact I dont even bring a backup(tele) these days. for a long time I played a Victoria bassman w/ reverb unit which more often than not was too loud. I'm in the market for a nother tweed deluxe to replace the princeton. People are always amazed, or I shoud say other guitarist are always amazed at the sound I get on stage iwth a tweed deluxe and princton.
My set up is: 98 Nocaster relic with SD JD bridge and Fralin blues special neck. BJF Baby pink clean boost. Micro Amp Boost. Clark Gainster ( my secret weapon ). George Dennis Tremelo. Ibanez E5 Echomachine for long delay Arion SAD 1 stereo delay which says on all the time with a liitle slap. Deluxe/Princeton |

Clay Hullett!
I've got a Hullett Deluxe. My main amp, wouldn't gig or record without it.

Cool looking Deluxes!
Brian, if you don't mind me asking, how specifically do you plug into your Clark? I've been doing a lot of experimenting with jumpering the channels, just interested in how other folks approach it. Do you set both volumes on 3? How aboutthe tone control? Looking for some initial ideas to try out when I get my Tele. Thx! |

As far as getting Sonny Landreth's tone, I work for his guitar tech at a small shop, and from what I can tell, Sonny's Matchless, Dumble, and Marshall get the most use. However, I built a little 5E3 Mission amp, and I really like it for the gigs I do. I use it with a '57 Fender Vibrolux I rebuilt for that tweed grind sound. Right now, the tweeds are my favorite Fenders.

Jack Knife:
I plug into normal channel input 1 then jumper normal 2 into bright 1. That way the main signal is the bright channel, and the normal channel is coming from input 2 which i adjust accordingly as to how much bottom end is desired, usually around 2 . The bright channel is on 3-3.5 anymore and I lose clean headroom. With that setting I have an all pupose sound for what I do ....i.e. just on the edge clean fender sound and the Clark Gainster takes me any further that I need. I highly recomend a Gainster with Tweed amps. |

Thanks, Brian. I'm going to try that setup and see what it's like. I don't have a Gainster, I'll see how my Route 66 works. Thanks for describing your setup, gives me something to think about with the way you described the priorities of the channels.
