Bass amp speaker replacement.

My Bass amp (there is no name on the front) has recently been making hissing noises, so I took the cover off the front to have a look at the speaker. I noticed the speaker had a tear in it, so I came to the conclusion I needed a new speaker. Now I am completely stuck.

The speaker itself has no labels on it at all. The people I got the amp off a few years ago said it was a 100w amp, and the only other thing I can find in relation to the speaker is that you can plug in an external 4 ohm speaker. There is also a little speaker in the top corner which seems to be working fine. Oh and I measured the speaker and it is a 12 inch.

should I buy a 12 inch 4 ohm bass speaker? the only ones I can find in the UK are 200w, would this be compatable with my amp?

Cheers, Jason.

EDIT: OK, I have found out my amp is 8 ohms. SOOOO this means I can get an 8 ohm speaker. Can I use any speaker that is over 8 ohms, such as 16 ohms? and would it damage my amp if I use a 4 ohm speaker?

Also now I have a problem with wattage..... can I use a 200w or 400w speaker in a 100w amp? would this affect performance in any way? also is it unwise to fit a 50w speaker to a 100w amp?

Jason - with all due respect - you sound like a canidate for a visit to a good technician.

The questions you're asking can't be answered accurately without more info than you're providing. While you won't generally hurt a solid state amp with higher numerical impedances you can smoke it with lower ones. You really should do a little more research and get the correct replacement speaker or get the original reconed or have the cone repaired.

I most certainly wouldn't put a 50W speaker in a 100W amp -- you could very easily damage the speaker. A higher-rated speaker would be fine, though.
