well said Wally!

Great description of the importance of multiple factors, especially the guitarist's attack.

There's an interview with Larry Carlton talking about the tweed deluxe and how he'd set it up so as to get a huge variety of response from his attack. Finding the sweet spot where it would stay clean with a lighter approach, but hit that overdriven, on the edge point with increased attack.

You're welcome, Jim, and thanks for the props.
This is one aspect in which the two amps propsed as options differ. The 5F6A and the JTM45 that was designed off of the Bassman have less compression and therefore are punchier and not quite as dynamically responsive. Fender moved in this direction from the mid-50's on through theUL amps of the late '70's-early '80's. Their amps got progressively cleaner with quick attack and less compression. As a result, these old, smaller tweeds sustain better and are more dynamically reactive. IF one is going to play one of these amps, it is valuable to understand how they react to the player/guitar input. One of my fave tweed is the 5E7 Bandmaster....more power than the 5E3 and maybe an even sweeter singing nature to it....and it cleans up with just an attention to pick attack to yield clean sonics.

You could mic the clean, but I think at such a low volume you wouldn't be getting any real tone out of it. Again this is my opinion, and I am new 5e3 user.
If you know how to use the volume control on your guitar and vary your touch, you can get a LOT of clean out of a 5E3. If all you do is dime and forget, you're correct, you won't get any clean.

Don't misunderstand the folks saying a 5E3 is not clean. It has great cleans.

Warm and even on the edge of being edgey sometimes (depending on settings), but very capable of cleans... unless you're playing in a rock band at even a smaller club.

Comparing a 5E3 to a BF/SF Princeton will show the difference in clean sound though, but 5E3's are still very capable of fantastic cleans at low to moderate volumes.

It's just a joke... while I'm not a fan of his music, I think he's a pretty cool guy who does good work with trying to help out addicts... I figured TDPRI'ers would get a chuckle or two out of a spoof of pop-art :)
