Eminence: Copperhead or Legend 1058 for a tweed Princeton?

I think I've narrowed it down to these 2 choices for my 1x10 6 watt tweed Princeton clone (a Marsh). But I'm torn and need some help.

This amp has had an alnico Weber Sig10 (warm, crunchy, not too bassy, but doesn't cut through live) and a ceramic Weber Sig10S (bolder, bigger, brighter and more "reedy" sounding in it).

Currently, it has an Eminence 30 watt blue frame alnico in it, which sounds pretty good, but tends to get a little squishy when I use overdrive/distortion pedals with it. I use a Boss DS-1 for hard rock "dirt", and that's about it. The ceramic Sig10S actually handled distortion & gain really well (alot better than the 2 alnicos I tried).

I want something that has some real snap & bite to it when played clean, almost like alnico, but something that handles overdrive & distortion pedals better (i.e. stays solid sounding, with firm low end).

So should I go for the Copperhead or the Legend 1058? If worse comes to worse, I can always grab another ceramic Sig10S since they're only $30 a pop, but I thought I'd look at these two as options.

thanks!
J.

That wasn't one of the options :) I already tried the Ragin' Cajun and it didn't have enough treble bite for my tastes.

Copperhead will give you the bite.

The Copperhead is both darker and quieter than the Ragin Cajun. So is the Legend 1058.

But the copperhead has that "edge" that the RC doesn't.

I'd get the Fender Blue Alnico (made by Eminince). It's the closest thing to the real deal you can get. They're all over the place, MF, Ebay, etc.

I like both those speakers, the copperheads more so. The CH does it all IMO, reminiscent tonally of old Jensens, but much louder without any harshness. Great overdrive tones too. I have not, however, tried this in a 1x10 amp. The Legends have their own virtues, clear and balanced, a bit less bass than the CH. Either one would probably work well.

I'm currently using an Eminence blue alnico out of a 90's Bassman RI, and it's good for clean tones and gets nice and ratty when cranked up, but doesn't hold up well when overdrive or distortion pedals are brought into the mix. I need something that can handle those types of pedals better than the blue alnico.

How can the Copperhead be both darker and quieter than the RC if it's supposed to have more treble bite than the RC? Isn't that how the Copperhead is advertised?

So the Legend is also darker and less loud than the RC?

If this is true of both speakers, then that may rule them out and make me try the RC again...

I'm curious as to how the Copperhead can be darker yet have more "edge" than the RC.

Depending on what that means, it may make it a better choice for a tweed amp than the RC....

I've got a 1058 in a Princeton Reverb amp. I think it'll do what you want, the Legend series are designed for vintage Jensen tone. The 1058 is louder and cleaner than the alnico 1028 and has good sparkle with late breakup.

Dimed isn't distorted enough?

Nope. For ratty, rough sounding stuff w/ the amp cranked all the way, it's great, but there are times when I want to add more gain to it, but not max the amp volume, and for that I need a speaker that holds up better to pedals.

I'm also wondering, how would the Weber 10F150T compare to the Copperhead and the Ragin Cajun?

I think I've ruled out the Legends for this amp based on some more info I've gathered about them.

Why not a Weber Neo 10?

A bit out of my price range-- I'd like to keep it at $100 or under (preferably $75 or under, shipped).

Cool speaker though!
