Original Jensen vs Reissue
I have a 65 Princeton Reverb. It has a reissue 10" Jensen in it. Assuming I was able to replace the reissue with a good condition original 65 Jensen, would it make a difference?
Should I pursue it? Thanks |

get a Weber
A friend of mine has a BF Princeton , the original speaker was fine but he stashed it and installed a Weber and it is much better and now has no worries about blowing a "vintage" speaker.

I think it would sound better, as the RI Jensens are OK, but a real one would be better. I agree with Mike that even better would be to get a Weber replacement speaker. I did a C10CA (california) in my PR, it sounded killer, and made the amp much louder, it was more like a DR. I later went further to a 12" cali, and that was the best tone of all.

12" Jensen
I built a new baffle board and put a RI Jensen 12" speaker in my '68 PR. It sounds great - very clean with good tone throughout the range. I have not cranked it way up, though. I have a Weber 8 incher in my little Tweed Champ, and the nice thing about Webers is that you can almost order the type of tone you want as well as the point when breakup begins. The Jensen is good, but if I had my druthers, I'd go with Weber.

I also built a new baffle for my 69 PR, but I installed an original 1966 dated Jensen C12N. Sounds great. More low end than the 10 inch speaker (a Weber C10Q), and smoother highs. The original Jensen C12Ns sound way better than the reissues.
A 12 incher in a PR really makes it sound a lot better. Louder as well. |
