Anybody Want a Minty 60's Deluxe Reverb?

http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com...tage/item/3628

I'll be in London in a few weeks, anything I can pick up for you guys while I'm there? Maybe some nice Fruit&Nut Dairy Milk bars or a yummy Deluxe Reverb?

LOL...with the value of the dollar against those EUro/lbs, I would imagine that that DR gets quite expensive.

Yep, that's why I offered to pick one up for someone else. I probably don't make that many dollars in a year.

I didn't inquire either. I'll bet it's at least GBP2,000 though.

I actually do plan on stopping in and browsing while I'm over there, we'll be spending half a day within a mile of Denmark Street in between our flight arriving and our overnight train departing for Scotland. Of course an item like that will probably move in a week or two unless their price is through the roof.

That's unbelieveable! A studio's probably going to snatch that up!

$3,942, eh? That's stiff. IF the box were pristine and the amp looked and smelled new, that price would not stop the conversation, although I am sure someone would try a counteroffer, right?
I don't like the water marks on the box. IT could have occurred with the amp not in the box, but it casts a pallor on the item. A good look and smell of the amp might assuage a person's concerns on that issue. The value of the box itself is compromised, though. LOL and seriousness, too. hehehe
IF the amp had never left the box and all looked as new....in other words NOS, name your price. I once saw a noted amp collector/dealer after he purchased an early '50's Deluxe NOS condition. The box was perfect. The amp was NOS....untouched. If the box with this BFDR looked opened but not roughed up and watermarked, questions don't arise. I doubt that any damage was done to the amp, but if I were a prospective buyer, I would have to make sure. Top dollar pricing demands top condition.

Dan,

This morning I sent an inquiry about their shop opening hours on the Sunday I'll be in London. I also asked about the price but haven't heard back.

Wally,

Assuming they are open on the afternoon of my visit and the amp is still there I'll give it a sniff for you.

JB,

I'll send you a Dairy Milk if I can resist eating them all on the plane on the way home...

See, now the box IS important!
That kind of price is for a pristine amp AND box!
Maybe they can find a pristine, NOS box to make the deal more appealing?

"Vintage and Rare" get some fantastic pieces from time to time, and the shop is well worth a visit anytime just to see some of the stuff there, - but........their prices are pretty damn steep even by London standards.

But looking at that amp I'm reminded of Nigel Tufnel's remark when pointing out his never played strat .."No... don't touch it! Don't even look at it!"

What would be the point of buying that amp at that sort of money, - it would be like "No don't touch it, and FOR HEAVENS SAKE DON'T SWITCH IT ON!"

Nigel had a point, right? LOL
Honestly, when I saw that early tweed in the pristine box, I asked the fellow if I could see the amp. I could tell that he really had no interest in pulling the amp out of the box. HE very nicely did pull the amp out far enough to see the whole cab, gave me a couple of seconds to gawk at the mint condition and then slipped it back in. I am sure that he didn't even turn it on before buying it. that aspect was of little consequence considering everything else about the amp and the market in which the amp existed......definitely not the player market, right?

I'll some Dairy Bars, too. For that price, I could build a DR clone with some very nice parts!

- Scott

P.S. Not kidding about the Dairy Bars. How expensive will those be to distribute?

Well, given that UK Cadbury chocolate doesn't have stabilizers and emulsifiers like the version we get in the USA...and given that I'll be arriving back in the middle of June...it may get expensive buying Dry Ice to ship to them in.

That's the reason they taste so much better over there, the cooler climate means they don't have to be chemically fortified to withstand 100F temps!

Rick J,

I'm only going to have a couple hours but I definitely want to get by Vintage and Rare between noon and four while they're open. Is there any one other shop within a few blocks that's a "must see" in your opinion?

A friend and I are arriving at Gatwick that morning and departing Euston in the evening on the overnight train to Inverness. So basically I'll only have about 6-8 hours to do all my sightseeing and grab a quick shower and dinner. A pity not to have a whole day, London is the only sizable city I've ever seen that I actually enjoy visiting.

I feel sorry for the guy who buys that, and has the first person here him playing it say, "hey man thats a nice looking reissue, but the vintage ones are really where its at."

Sorry to dive in and pre-empt Rick (I'm sure he'll forgive me) but there's a bit of info here: http://www.denmarkstreetonline.co.uk/. Seemingly, of the "interesting" shops in Denmark Street only Hank's is open on a Sunday (11am - 5pm), though some places in the surrounding area, i.e. Charing Cross Road, etc. may also be open.

However, I'd say that even if that is so, they'd just be fairly ordinary retailers stocking items you can buy in the USA for a lot less. Still, a bit of window shopping can't hurt and the odd gem may just come to light.

Have a great time over here!

Hi Brent, (and Tony!!)

As you will see from the link Tony has posted, Denmark Street (where the V&R shop is) is the centre of the London Guitar and Musical Instrument Trade. There are several shops within a few hundred yards of V&R, but, not sure how many will open on a Sunday.

One of the most "interesting" ( I use the word loosely) was the late but unlamented "Andy's" run by the notorious Andy Preston, who has now mercifully gone bust. He often had some really nice pieces in there, rarely his, (on consignment) but I think at least one TDPRI member never saw his money after his goods were sold.

"Wunjos" which is more or less opposite V&R usually have some nice stuff, including some relatively inexpensive "wierdo" bits from small European makers.

When exactly are you coming Brent? If I'm around maybe I'll come up and meet you, - maybe even drag Tony along as well. Denmark Street is near Tottenham Court Road underground station, which is three stops up the Northern Line from Euston.

Indeedy, I'm definitely up for that, provided it's not one of the first three Sundays in June, when I'll be away myself.

Does it come with a cover or is that what the box is for?

There's quite a few vintage blackface Deluxe Reverbs around New Jersey right now at the various Guitar Centers.

Must See List: Wunjo's, Vintage & Rare

I got an E-mail back from the folks at Wunjo's and they will be open that afternoon as well. That's definitely a must-see if their web place is a reflection of the shop itself.

So I think the "must see" shops are Vintage & Rare plus Wunjo's. Nothing around my hometown like either one of those places.
