Silverface Champ - in a head!

I recently completed a slow to completion amp/cab project with the arrival of a pair of Weber 10A125's that I scored a major deal on. These speakers went in a new 2x10" cab that I got to be driven by a Silverface Champ that I put in a head cabinet. The Champ had a new (& bigger) Hammond OT put in and a 1/4" speaker jack installed.

Here's the finished product(s):

I have to say a Champ in a head cab is both cute AND sounds great. The speakers still need some critical listening applied but so far I'm liking them.

You did a beautiful job.

My main dissatisfaction with Champs has always been the small speaker. Just not much you can do to change that boxy sound. The bigger speakers should make that amp sound terrific.

Thanks, although I have to be completely transparent and say that I didn't do any of the building/covering - I just know very talented builders. I just came up with the idea and bolted it all together when it showed up at my door.

That looks frigging awesome. What kind of sound are you getting out of it? Who cares that you did not build it; there are builders and designers. Builders cant build with out a design...

Wow, cool!

This has been a project I've wanted to do!

I've always had the idea that a 2x10 would be a perfect match for the Champ.

Did you fabricate the cabs yourself or buy them somewhere. ?

Nice job, really looks great

The sound is a really satisfying - nice and clean at low to moderate volumes for practice but push it up beyond 6 and some hair begins to creep in and fully dimed theres a nice natural grind on the edges without becoming mushy, loose or losing note to note definition. I'm surprised by the impact the new OT has - it really provides for a solid bottom end with no flab. In fact, I'd say the 2x10's have a good snap to the bottom end.

The last step I'm going to take is to get a good NOS 6V6 and 12ax7. I had a spare NOS 5Y3 so that's already in there.

I didn't do any of the fabrication - I just have the good fortune of knowing some talented builders who are open to my ideas and will build for me.

Check outour man Johnny Crash's gallery. He does almost all his stuff as heads. Pretty sure one is sort of a souped up 5F1...

By the way, I just completed a 5F1 running through a Weber 10A125-O (no pix yet- gotta put on the tweed). It is a raunch machine. Chords can get a little muddy, but holy crap, does it kill for blues soloing. It loves P-90s.

Very cool!

Champs always sound better running something more than that stock 8"!!!

I do have a 5F1 head... but I also completed two amps in SF Champ chassis and similarly sized heads.

So would these talented builders do another one? If so, drop me a message or email.
