6V6 Heaven

A while a go I posted a thread of my new amp. It's a single ended 6V6 but with a 5Y3, 12AX7 and 12AY7.

So, sort of like 5E3 but sitting somewhere above a 5F1.

Well, the 6V6 that came in it had no label on it but I was pretty happy with the sound.

I bought an old amp...no name, made by some dude so I could source valve sockets and some of the resistors for an amp I've had commissioned by a chap here in Wellington.

On getting the amp there were two RCA CRC-6V6-GT/G VT107a valves in there.

And are these things sweet or what. The overdrive is more natural...compressed and earthy...if they are the right terms.

They are so nice. Musical and lovely.

The tele into the amp now sounds more like what I'd been hearing in my head.

In short...I'm impressed with these old tubes.

I shall try for an "inner workings" photo.

It's not pretty but it does work.

i'm always willing to bet a few extra bucks on NOS power tubes. as my grandpaw used to say, they don't make 'em like that anymore! JMO, YMMV

Most folks feel that NOS or close sound way better than new production, but unless you're talking champs or similar, getting good sets of tubes can be freekin' pricey, at least here in the US, and presumablt most of Europe. I saw 'matched quads' of NOS Mullard EL34s going for a (admittedly negotiable) US$1000 in Hong Kong a few years ago.

Getting a good quad of anything NOS is pretty expensive. I actually find myself hoarding them instead of using them--a Mullard 12AX7 is likely to outlive me in a guitar amp (manly because I'm a bass player), but I'm half afraid to put it in for fear it'll self destruct or something.
