Have any of you built the amp from "The Guitar Amp Handbook"?
My girlfriend gave me this book for my birthday and I decided to build the amp that Dave Hunter designed and put in his book. However, I have already come across discrepancies in component values between the parts list he gives and the layout diagram. I'm wondering if anyone has built this amp, and how did it turn out?

I've been wondering the same thing! It looks fun. Kind of like a Fender/Marshall preamp section and an old Gibson/Kalamazoo output section.
I know Dave Hunter built one :)

I'm on page 41 so........
I haven't gotten there yet. Interesting stuff for a 'tech-challenged' person such as meself. I'm really learning a lot.
I too would be very interested to hear any comments |

Yep, I built it about a year ago. It is basically a 5F2A circuit with a few mods. The bigger OT is much louder than stock 5F2A, and with the 12" celestion, it is a giggable amp, IMO. Hunter will send an attached sheet that shows any mistakes from the original design. He even emailed me with a few answers I had.

I remember finding a PDF file with more thorough instructions and drawings somewhere, also written by Hunter. I found it through a Google search. |

Mr Hankey, the differences are significant. For instance, the parts list calls for a 47uf cap, where on the layout, it's a .47uf cap. Luckily theres a photo of the board in the book, and I was able to read the value off the cap itself. That was the major discrepancy, but there were a couple others I think.
I'm gonna go ahead with the build, I think.... Last edited by mofugly13; March 28th, 2008 at 02:16 AM. |

Well, I only got to crank it to 10 once so far, and I have to say, I had a sweet time. Coming from a clean country amp (twin) to this one allows me to play single-note leads without having the bottom drop out. The added overdrive was like having a dirty pedal in front of my twin. The only problem...when I want to play a Western Swing song, I can't clean it up enough. It's a one-trick pony, but it does what it does very well.
