Fender Concert II (Rivera era) new to me
Peoples:
I just horsetraded my way into a pristine Concert II 1x12 combo. Original footswitch and cable, no tolex rips; really in damn near perfect shape. Anyway, it has a Celestion G12 Classic Lead 80 with a ginormous magnet and I'm wondering what speaker was stock and also what speakers warm up this puppy both clean and with overdrive (and maybe weigh a bit less!; I think this thing weighs more than my '94 Super). The tubes seem to be in fine shape, but I'm also wondering what people have used in these to good effect for creamy gain channel stuff. Also looking for a cover for it, but it seems nothing in the current lineup of Fender covers would fit. (I measured the thing and it's 18 1/2" H x 23 3/4" W x 10 5/8" D (at the top below the faceplate) and 11 1/2" D (at the bottom). Tuki has a cover to fit, but it's also $75 bucks. Thanks! |

This site is dedicated to the Princeton Reverb II, which is a 6V6 version of your amp. Lots of info, maybe you will find it interesting:

This amp came with an Eminence speaker that was definitely not up to the job. Even if they didn't blow, the couldn't handle the power and gave a loose flubby bass. The 4x10 version worked better, but it was bigger and even heavier than your 1x12.
Back then, guys put EVs in there after the Eminence blew, and they worked well. Nowadays I'd look at Eminence Legend, or contact Ted Weber (webervst.com) for advice. I'd bet Ted has just the right driver for you. This amp will weigh a ton no matter what speaker is in there. It is built like a tank, with big transfomers. P.

Paul G: Thanks for the reply. I'll look up Weber. I also noticed last night that Jensen (and some others) do neodymium speakers for guitar amps. I'm somewhat familiar with these from bass rigs - any intel on them for guitar combos?
I also noticed last night a slight ruffling, static-y sound coming from the amp even at very low volume. It sounded just like an old scratchy record (remember those). It was not due to cables, nor to any control pots on the amp (tried them for static and nothing). Thoughts? I think I'll look for a good amp tech in NYC (taking suggestions). Thanks. Quote:

Jensen has a neo called the "Blackbird" or some kinda bird. It handles 100W and the only hit on it is that it may be a bit on the dark side, but that amp has good highs so you might like it.
