Bassman 59 Reissue
My birthday is coming up and I was going to ask my parents for a Bassman reissue. But I have a couple of questions. First if I really like Peter Green BB KIng and Kid Andersen do you think this would be a suitable amp? Second how does it compare to the Super Reverb reissue? I have a 50 watt valvetronix amp and I was wondering if the bassman's volume level is similar and how much louder is it than the deluxe reverb?

Man, I only wish my parents were so kind as to buy me something like that!
Anyway, I had a bassman RI for a while. They are great amps, without a doubt. For the influences you mentioned, you should love it, though it doesn't have the big reverb sounds that Peter Green often used... I've played, but not owned SRRI, and I'd take the bassman over it any day. The bassman weighs less, and has a lot more mids... both are great amps, but I lean more towards the tweed sound. I also like that the bassman amps are some of the lightest 4x10" amps around. Volume is subjective, but I always felt like my bassman was LOUD. I have no doubt that it is a good deal louder than the 50 watt valvetronix... I'd say it is quite a bit louder than a deluxe too. I've played shows were I had a deluxe breaking up without a problem, where as I pretty much never got to push my bassman to the point of breaking up unless we were playing either a really big room or I was using an attenuator. |

The Bassman is a fantastic amp and, even without a reverb circuit, it has its own built in reverb which seems to come from the 4, 10's in a large baffle board.
I can play a chord into the Bassman and it will ring on long after the last note's been played. Do the same on the normal channel of my DRRI and the chord just stops dead in its tracks once the last note sounds. If you install a 5U4 tube rectifier and some good 12AY7 pre-amp tubes the volume will be controlled in such a way that you'll get some lovely sag and grit in the tone at fairly manageable volume levels. And for the style you obviously are copping it will be a marvelous amp. If you need more dirt then a good OD pedal in front of the amp will do the job. The amp is very pedal-friendly. Mine will go to my grave with me! It is the ultimate 'keeper' amp. |
