Anyone do a 'different' 5E3 build?

I'm currently sourcing parts to build a 5E3, and I'm going to keep it pretty standard as far as the innards go, I may try changing values to voice the amp differently later...IF it needs it.

What I'm asking is about the cabinet/speaker configuration. I'm going to make the enclosure myself so I'm thinking doing it as a head with a 2X10 cabinet. So basically what I'm asking is have any of you tried anything other than the 1X12 in the standard tweed cab approach, including just making your own combo cabinet. If so, do you think it changed the character of the amp at all. I'll probably make the cabinet open back like a tweed Fender. It seems the benefit of doing piggyback would be that if I want to build something else, I'll have a usable cabinet already. If you can tell by the 2X10 I'm already thinking 5F4 next.

Just curios, and I love looking at pictures of amps all day.

Thanks in advance.

I made my 5e3 clone into a head and I run mine through a 2x12 open back cab that was a Peavey Duel amp that is loaded with Eminence speakers I bought from a member here that came out of a Fender Twin. It sounds great. The build I am building now is a 5f4 in a head configuration.

Ironic , I just asked about an 5e3 cabinet variations for possible sound improvement. Not saying there is anything wrong with original. I am doing a Mission 5e3 build and have not started cab yet. I still want one speaker config..

I have mine in a 1x15 (Fender Pro) size cab. It's pretty cool...and gives a nice whomp when you hit the low E.

My thoughts exactly.

After building a narrow panel 5E3, I caught the amp building bug. So, I pulled the chassis out of the narrow panel, put it in a head cab, and use the narrow panel + speaker as a multi-use speaker cab for many other builds. The sound of the 5E3 didn't change after putting it in a head cab, IMO. It does sound a little different in a 2x12 cab though. Mostly louder.

Three cheers for the 1x15 configuration. Works great and looks cool.

5E3 (with princeton 6g2 channel instead of the Normal 5e3 channel)

(it is over the Reverb 63' clone, and a 18W lite clone, on the right a 2x12" with alnicos Weber)

Epiphone Valve Junior Cabinet (100 bucks) converted to 5E3 cab - kept the speaker (Eminence Lady Luck 70 watt RMS 1x12). Sound great. Also this is one of Jim's Lil Dawg 5E3 25 watt chassis. Notice the 25 watt transformer which gives this amp an agressive quality.

All I build any more are heads - I'm in love with the flexibility of choosing diff cabs, plus with a little guy like a 5E3 or Champ, the head almost fits in a suitcase!

My cabs as of late have been 1X12, 2X12, 1X10, 2X10, and 4X10. All 12's have been various ceramic speakers by Weber, Jensen, Celestion, and Eminence. 10's have been a mix of alnico and ceramic - mainly Weber and Eminence. All cabs except for the 1X10 have been open back, for the 10's. All of the cabs with 12's have been both open and closed back.

My very personal opinion? 5E3's with any 10 config seem to be a personal taste. I personally like a 5E3 through a 2X10 open back, with either a pair of ceramics or a cer/alnico mix. But I tend to favor 10's, anyway.

I've enjoyed my different 12" setups with a 5E3 head, but since all of my 12's are ceramics, this in itself is a bit of a departure from your typical 5E3. I like it, but you may not. Not night and day, but if you are an alnico freak, you may not dig it.
