Steve Winwood, 5e3 tone?
Anyone heard the new Steve Winwood single? Has just a wonderful, nasty sounding over-driven guitar tone to it, and I'm wondering, from all those here that would know better than I, is that an example of the 5e3 tone?

Sounds like a 5E3 Deluxe to me.
I read somewhere that Clapton was playing on that record so it's probably a Twin. I saw Steve Winwood about a year ago in a small club and he was playing through a solid state Fender and used a Line6 Pod. His tone was nothing special but his playing and complete set and performance and especially his guitar playing were spectacular. PS Just listened to that track and it has Eric Clapton written all over it. Last edited by Gee; March 23rd, 2008 at 09:41 AM. |

That's the one. And while the solo certainly does sound like Clapton, I'm more captivated by the grittier, dirtier sounding guitar work throughout the rest of the song. Can't really call it rhythm guitar, cause it's pretty much lead work until the solo kicks in, but unless Clapton's done a major about face from his sound of the last thirty years, it doesn't seem like he's doing that part also.
If it is, kudos, and he should explore that sort of stuff more often. |

Yes, it's Winwood. Stevie is a great guitarist - Clapton says so himself during the intro to the Steveie section of Crossroads 2. Stevie is one of those people who does a number of things exceptionally well: sings, plays B3 and piano, guitar, writes great songs, and looks great for a guy who is less than two months from sixty. I'm green with envy

Dirty City, I like it! Glad to see some new output from Steve. I always dug his playing and voice. He's always been an incredible talent. Don't know what amp he's using, but it sounds great.
