WGS - Stand up folks
Thanks to the sage advice of fellow TDPRI'ers (thanks, folks), I contacted WGS regarding the cone cry issues I was having with a Vet. 30.
David said to ship it back, so he could check it out. I was reluctant, as I'd have to pay return shipping, but I went for it. 15 bucks later, it was returned to WGS...
David confirmed that the basket had been bent during shipping (unless I was using it to play horseshoes with). Also, he suggested that I go with their Green Beret, since most of my amps are currently in the 20 watt and under category...
It cost an extra 10 bucks to get the replacement shipped out to me, but I'm also keeping in mind that WGS has to eat the production costs for speaker that UPS damaged...
I finally got a chance to install the Green Beret tonight, and actually like it better than the Vet 30 (especially since there is NO cone cry), and it's not even broken in, yet.
I have to applaud WGS for what they've done - they responded to my issue, and replaced a damaged unit with another model. This seems fairly unheard of with raw speaker vendors.
I've also learned that as long as the magnets are in the G12M and lighter category (~35 ounces), that they seem to be more resistant to courier abuse (this is for 12's only - I've never had an issue with a single 10, whatever size magnet). The three speakers that I received that have the most cone cry were the Vet 30 (~50 oz. magnet), Emi Governor (~60 oz. magnet), and G12-80 (~50 oz. magnet).
In the end, the Green Beret ended up costing me about 10 bucks more than my excellent Texas Heat, but at least it isn't anything more than a boat anchor.
Kudos to WGS, even though I'll be going with speaker vendors that use premium shipping methods in the future. It's just too much of a PITA to go cheap on shipping and end up with a damaged speaker.
