All Brown Super, All the time! (Ohm content)
Well, I've been thinking about speakers for the '60 Super. First thing off the bat, what ohm rating should I look for for this amp? I don't want to just blindly assume I have 8 Ohm speakers in this amp. I'm thinking ceramic speakers just so it is a little tougher, as I plan on gigging it. I do have 4 ceramic magnet 10" Fender replacement speakers out of my old Super Reverb (they are 8 Ohm units) Will 2 of them work?
Got any suggestions for 10" ceramics folks? What are your favorites? OK, secondly... Lets talk tubes. Should I go 6L6 or 5881? Clean sound is key here, but if 5881's change the tone even the slightest amount I will stick with the 6L6's. Thanks again everyone for all the insight here. I'm not really an amp tinkerer of sorts, (Well, I guess I am now...) but this little brown amp is really stealing my heart. |

Would have been 2 x 8 ohms = 4ohms parallel. The Super Rev. sepakers would be 8 ohms, so two of them would work.
Post the code off the rim of the speaker, and someone can tell you the maker. I have ceramic CTS 10's in my SF Vibrolux, and I reckon they are great speakers. The Oxfords and Rolas in these? Well, most don't seem to like them.

Welcome Aboard Rob
You don't say what circuit is in your Super, I am assuming it is the 6G4. The 6L6GC tube was spec'ed for this amp and the plate voltages on both the 6G4 and 6G4-A are a tad high for real 5881's. If you want to go cleaner get some NOS 6L6's or 7581A's. Another option after the amp is biased correctly is to boost the voltages to the preamp tubes SLIGHTLY. Brownfaces are traditionally low, and that is what gives them their great harmonic content.
