My New/Old Archtop/BluesBox
Well, got me what I believe is a 1951 Gibson L-48. It's got a solid top and trapezoid inlays but no neck binding or I would have throught L-50. If im wrong let me know...but love this thing! Just thought I'd show er off a bit! hehe!

good on ya my son
That's the nicest looking guitar I've seen today. Not counting the base, is the bridge a one piece?

Thanks guys, not a one piece bridge though. Im thinking the top part of the bridge is a replacement (not the wood part...the metal part) The metal piece is stamped Gibson under it and its definately very old...the saddles seem to be bone or something...they ain't metal like on my LP.

I am a guessing that is a late 1940s L-48 mainly because of the board inlays.
I have seen quite a few of these and if I recall all the early 50s models had dot inlays. The tuners appear to have been replaced and I am not sure about the finish -it may have been redone - Just does not look like even a well-worn Gibson burst. But it is hard to tell from the pic. The solid top is a definite bonus. What really surprised me about these guitars is they have far better projection that many f-hole archtops. Vwery nice geetar and enjoy her.

According to the FON in the guitar its a '51. As for finish...it was stripped and redone...not professionally...orignal tuners were replaced with Grovers and im nearly positive the bridge is replacement Gibson.
This is the closest thing I have found on the net to the guitar I have. http://www.elderly.com/vintage/items/45U-1111.htm Cheers Mikey |
