That is really cool. I am a stoned cold pre-1957 Epi fan. I have owned a few NY-made Epis including an FT-45 and Deluxe archtop. A few months ago I ran across an Epi which, based on the serial number, was one of the last made before they closed up shop. If I had not just purchased a Kay Kraft I would have been all over it.

This guitar plays and sounds like a dream. I traded a black Epiphone Les Paul for it. I got the better end of the deal, but the Les Paul had been owned by a freind who had passed away and I was offered the FT-45 in trade by a guitarist who was in a band with our late friends son. So the Karma/Mojo factor evened out the deal.
I took it into Mountain Music right after I got it, just to have a new nut put on, the guy behind the counter went on and on about how I had the year wrong and its a late '60s model, insisting that he was an expert and I should trust him. Then he offered me $1000 on the spot. Guess where I don't shop anymore? An ex bandmate of mine also has a '44, but his is an archtop. They have the same neck shape, same paddle head shape, same script on the logo. They are from a different time. |

Cool guitar. I once had an early 50's Epi flattop. As I recall, it had a really hand-filling neck (I liked those back then), an arched back, and was kind of a cross between a dreadnaught and SJ-200 in side. I think it had a wider lower bout than a dreanaught. Maple back, I believe.
Anyway, it was a really nice guitar, great sounding & playing. They are neat and kinda unknown. |
