McPherson acoustic
Yesterday afternoon a good friend stopped by to show off his new guitar that he had ordered and just picked up the day before. A McPherson MG 4.5.
Im not an expert by any means on Acoustics or what to look for but this guitar was nothing short of impressive. Im not sure I cant even explain the tone other than saying it was very thick and warm with alot of sustain. I have heard of these guitars but have never had the chance to get my hands on one. I did not search for any other posts on the forum but does anyone own or have played one of these? Im in no position to afford this price of guitar but would surely consider one if I was. Again, Im nowhere close to be any kind of expert on acoustics but really enjoyed this guitar and thought I would share.

What a guitar!
I will be the first to say that the McPherson is truly a world class guitar. I don't own one, but have had the good fortune to play one at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville on a few occasions. The sustain comes from a number of things such as bracing that is hollowed out in the middle. (you have to see it to understand what I'm saying) and a cantilevered neck. I'm not sure how well the offset soundhole helps, because I've played Tacoma's and Ovations with the same thing with nowhere near the overall sound. Perhaps a combo of all of these? I will say, however, that I doubt they are worth quite what they charge. This could be controversial, but I played a $7,500.00 McPherson that was phenomenal, and right after that a $3,700.00 Taylor 814 Fall Limited Edition that had every bit as much tone, action, looks, and almost as much sustain! I doubt sustain is worth the extra 4 grand. These are great guitars, and I would buy one in a heartbeat if it weren't for the price. Maybe these will come down a bit in the future when the hubub is over.....I can hope anyway.

Well there is no doubt that this is an outstanding guitar. He bought his from a dealer in St. Louis and told me that it was right around $4400 with a hardshell case. I have looked at several of the models on the wesite and this seems to be about the minimum that you would pay.
I suppose its a matter of prefference but this is one acoustic I would be more than happy to own.

Last year I was at Elderly's in Lansing, MI. While they were appraising a few of my old Gibsons, I wandered around and tried out a few things. The McPherson's were very impressive, very loud, lots of sustain. Personally I prefer a more vintage style guitar. And I am always leary of lightly braced guitars, will they last? $4400 is quite an investment.
