acoustic preamp sugg
i have an old taylor with a cheap martin thinline. i can turn my acoustasonic jr up to 8-9 without feedback but it is not very loud. right now i am using a signalflex (39$) that connects to the jack of the guitar. it does make it loud enough but i feel like my tone is not there
currently looking at these lr baggs gigpro art mp (3 different ones around 100$) also presonus has the blue tube & another preamp around $100 but i dont know if they are used for this purpose also some of these might make a good overdrive on my tele |

Pre amps
I just picked up a used Tech 21 Acoustic DI from a fellow TDPRI'r. Excellent unit in my opinion. Very versitile unit. As a bonus, it sounds great running my tele through it into the effects return of my amp. I've also tried the Baggs Para DI. It's a very nice unit also. My fellow worship team member runs his Taylor acoustic and his JB tele ( with effects ) through it straight into the board. The gig pro looks like a nice little unit. I have not tried one, but I've seen ( and heard ) several acostic pickers at open mic's use them and they sound great. I've also ran my Larrivee through my old 901 Real Tube with excellent results. Just crank the drive WAY down! The Blue Tube may be better suited ( although they are mainly an electric instrument pre-amp ) for acoustic. These can be found used pretty cheap. Hope this helps a bit!!

Same rig
I have a couple of Taylors with Fishman Thinlines & also a Alvarez Yairi with a Fishman Rare Earth & I use a Baggs Para Acoustic DI. Love it! I have used Crate acoustic amps & preamps & also a Fender acoustic amp but I don't like having to carry an amp when my pa will handle all my acoustic can give it. I leave home without my Baggs DI.

I run all of my acoustics through a Baggs Para-acoustic preamp. I recently got a PreSonus Acousti-Q, but I haven't stage tested it yet.
I use an Ashly Bass Preamp with my Ovation mandolin. It has all the features you'd want and sounds great. I don't use the crossover though. |

I have the earlier Baggs preamp, with eq, but no DI. It works good. I also use on occasion a Behringer DI which has either 9v internal or can be phantom powered, which gives a nice kick to the signal and seems to boost mids but cut the quackiness of a piezo pickup. I get the best sound running through both, so the LR Baggs Para DI might be the answer.

I also have an older Baggs Para Acoustic Preamp. The output can be used with a TRS to XLR adaptor which allows you to use the phantom power on the mixer to power it. The middle output goes to the tuner and the other jack is the input. I like it better then the newer ones.

Count me among those who favor the Baggs Para-acoustic (or however they spell it) DI. Great little box.
Like most of you, I have several guitars. If I have to sell them for food, the last one to go will be the custom J-40 I ordered in Fall, 1986 and received in March, 1987 ... a full 9-month gestation period, but worth every cent. The only changes I ordered were dots instead of hex fretboard inlays, top toner, and tort. pickguard. Yes ... all cosmetic. What I learned is that when you order a custom Martin, they start by choosing the wood. It's a great box. Anyhow ... it has whatever the standard Fishman under-saddle pickup was back then and I run it into the Baggs. I ordered the guitar and the pickup was installed by Terry Straker at GuitarWorks, Ltd., in Evanston, IL.) The Baggs does a fantastic job of eliminating the annoying habits of piezos. I run it directly into house PA or into an amp. Either way, it's an affordable and portable solution. Also ... The guitar I find myself playing most is a Fender D'Aquisto archtop I bought used a few years ago (12th Fret, Toronto). The stock humbucker was replaced with, I think, a Classic 57 and it also has a Webber bridge with some kind of piezo under it. Works like a charm and, although it doesn't have the fullness of the Martin, it does allow me to run stereo through my Pearce G2r so I can blend acoustic and electric sounds, run one side through an Intellifex ... stuff I'm just starting to experiment with. Fun! Cheers, byrdland |
